Smile Re: Stella

I was told Stella was a male... Then I was told she was a female. She is at least 12 yrs old, we have had her for over 11 yrs. She was a "working" bird... LOL. Not sure if anyone here ever watched the Martha Stewart Show... Marc Marrone from Parrots of The World with all the animals use to bring Stella on the show...

Well, Stella wasn't cut out for the big or small screen and liked flying around the set... She got her pink slip and was canned from the job... LOL.

Marc knows how much I love Vasa's, as I mentioned before we had a Lesser... So when he couldn't bring her on the show anymore and he knew I would like, LOVE her.. He asked if I would like her, I was BLOWN away..

NOW, eventually I guess I will have her sexed- but she has never "shown" or "looked" maleish... LOL. and she has never laid an egg... so we call her a her and are quite happy.

She is amazingly insane and wonderful.

Now I know there are a few other Greaters here, are your's "tactile"? She TOUCHES EVERYTHING with her tongue- feels things, runs her tongue along them, etc.. VERY tactile....

How old is Eve? And how many Vasa's are here?

Just you and me with the vasa's! At 12, it should be obvious whether you have a male or female. Females lose head feathers during breeding season and males get their hemi-penis, it is this reason that they do not need to be dna, sexed. they are seasonal dimoporhic. Soooooooo, unless you have a lesser, (female lessers do not lose head feathers) and she has not lost head feathers, you night have a male, that has never shown it's hemi-penis. However the eye ring is that of a greater, lessers have small eyerings that are dark grey. Hmmmmmm.......this is interesting to me. what changes have you noticed throughout the year? Feather loss? color change? skin color change? Singing? (lots of whistle like sounds) Judging by your pics, if they are recent, they are pics taken during the breeding season as the beak is white, and not dark grey. And the cere is dark, not light. But no head feather loss, or yellow. I would say male, judging by the pics.

Eve is an 8 year old Male. And very tactile as well as very mechanical. He can take anything apart.

I have to ask you guys
- can they get the Lesser & Greater Vasa to breed together & would that affect the female's plumage issues?

2 Vasas seems like a lot in my book - if this gets around we might attract more owners.

no they can not be bred together, as despite their names, they are completely different species of parrots.

OK, I thought I mentioned somewhere... that she loses her head feathers starting in Feb or March depending on weather (colder etc..). She is a greater (I am sure I said that somewhere ) and I mentioned I "had" a lesser, that was a PBFD Lesser. (Sly). The feather loss this year isn't as bad as last year, she looked bald... three years ago was the worst.

Sly sang WONDERFULLY !!! Stella- well she has her scream down well and a little singing, but not the same tone as Sly.. But Sly was MANY years ago and a lesser, so I don't know if there is a difference

(and sorry, I mess up :lose, loser, loose, losses ALL the time... LOL)doreen

PSssssssssssst - Don't tell Eve there's a girl Greater Vasa nearby. The 2 could go into full hormonal glory!
I always wanted to use that icon .... me bad ...

Thanks for the info on 2 types.
Too bad they are both Vasa 'named' - when the lesser & greater are not the same species. I thought the scientists were a bit more up on their craft than that. Course they took their sweet time recataloging the Bourkes .....

ok male female question here... Would I have "seen" the male "thing" going on by now if She were a He? I SAW SLY's NO DOUBT ABOUT IT !!! LOL. Came in one night, almost had heart failure. Earlier that day I had helped with a prolapsed cockatoo and all I could think of was "Well THIS IS GOING TO BE A FUN VET BILL !!! " LOL....

Does Eve still want to feed or be fed? Stella LOVES being fed though she has never fed me.. Most of the other birds have, but she WANTS to be fed....

And this is for Eve-- EVE--- we are going to be only a SHORT TWENTY MILES FROM YOU ONCE WE MOVE !!! Wanna playdate?? I can just imagine two Vasa's having flight time in my barn -- it is like 40 feet by 80 feet of open enclosed space.. We are going to do flight training in there. We rent animals for TV and Movies and all and want to work on flight recall and all...

HI EVE !!! From Stella...
