Default Who feeds Feral Pigeons? - why?

We started feeding a nearby flock a few years ago - mainly in the winter. It started mostly with our Budgies & their unused seeds. I hate waste. Then there was road construction that made the City persuade the Pigeons to use a park attached to the Parking lot for the transit users. Every day they brought bags of meal for the birds & in no time they were hanging out in the park instead of the wires overhanging the sidewalk. I tell you they were very unpopular with the pedestrians - myself included. When I saw the change I though this should be encouraged. When the weather is very cold I was worried about their health & well being.

Now after 2 years of feeding them & many more people in our area are adding to it with leftover bread & some seed, they are looking pretty good. From time to time I add grit and vitamins to their food.

Does anyone else feed Feral Pigeons, why & how's it going?

sounds pretty good. The local pigeons aren't real close to where I am at so I don't feed them. Here they have competition. Crows and Seagulls.

No feral pigeons where I live, too many hawks and kestrels, but I use to feed the ones in Times Square years ago when I worked in Manhattan and they knew me! As soon as they saw me coming with my bag, they would all fly down from the ledges of the buildings to flock at my feet waiting for their corn and canary seed. I love pigeons! I never could understand how people cannot like them...

That is what happens to us - it is our choice of bag - they have sentries & they will fly to us 1st, almost like tame birds.

Please, keep feeding the feral pigeons!!! This may sound odd, coming from a person who owns a prey bird herself, but they're a key source of food for raptors, especially city-nesting peregrine falcons.

I am with Bea! I love pigeons and any bird. If it has feathers I love it. God made it and I love it! and....I help feed it.

Yes we have a few Peregrine nests in the high rises around here. We have Red tail Hawks as well. Cities have such a strange food chain. In this case I think the whole food chain benefits. It doesn't upset me. A friend of mine lives in a house just north of me & she has 3 feeders in her backyard. She was upset the day a raptor landed but as adjusted.

I also feed the pigeons all the leftover seed and pellets from my flock. I have several families that live in my backyard along with yardbirds and songbirds.

Nope, we don't have pigeons here either. Instead, we feed these guys:

Tiana loves taking left over bird food down to feed the geese . There's so many of them there, and almost everyone feeds them. They're eating chips in one pic, actually, from a few kids walking past. And those ones in the photos are only about 1/3 of the total number there, there's close to 100 birds in that one park, all being fed several times a day... Explains the extra weight around their middles, huh

Oh, and yes, those are reversed wings pointing out sideways. I've been pestering the council for months to get someone to take a look, but apparently they're not worth the money. Most of these are farm friends who've been dropped off when people could no longer afford them, or just didn't want them anymore, which is sad.

That's a hoot! Look at that one running from over the "hill". Ducks are so wonderful! So peaceful to watch.
