She does look like one of Arty's. Wish she was, then I could hold her!
She is really pretty....if you look at her tail feathers they go black, white, black, white....she is nicely marked. She has like a light grey on her back that goes to black. I was going to build a loft for her but she has her routine.....she is programed with where she goes and when. I know she would never use it. It gets cold here in the winter, I am wondering if she will stay around then.
Your little friend has my brain working overtime.
Abi is definately used to humans, ya know what might work, now just think about this for awhile....
If my birds mate again, I will hand raise a baby for you...
In the mean time you turn that shed into a loft...
I will ship you out the baby when its time....
House your new family member in the loft, I or Susan or Camille or Heather can help you train your new bird to home, your new bird will encourage Abi to use the loft & possibly stay there always.
Abi maybe leaving at night (this is the mystery), but where ever she is going there isn't food and or water, she may very well be abandoned.
Think about it and let me know...
Sounds great Arty.....I will think about it. My only worry is if I go back to visit my family in Jersey occasionally....it seems like I will go every two years.
I have no one to care for the birds here. I found a place to board Miki but don't the dove/pigeons have to stay in there loft? I worry about Abbi sometimes because at least once when Abbi first arrived she was by the pond and I did not see her there..I let the dogs out and she did not even nudge. She has no fear of them, unless maybe they got too close to her....I am careful now before I let them out. I make sure she is up high otherwise my dogs would eat her!
Once the weather cools a little bit I will try to follow Abbi again at dusk. I know the area that she headed to. Now I just have to pinpoint it.
Do two male or two female pigeons get along?
Well, 2 females will get along better than 2 males, as far as telling what sex Abi is and or the maybe new baby is only for the lord to know, Usualy when there are 2 birds it is easy to tell what sex they are...
Its a gamble...
Yes the birds need to stay in there loft, you will have to train the new bird to home before free flying, hopefully Abi will visit the new bird in the loft and decide to stay, you will still need to allow her to be free, but then this is what free flying is (allowing your birds to be free), you can secure the loft at night to keep them safe but you will have to open the trap during the day to allow them freedom..
Lovely bird - nice to make friends with the locals.
Q's
How old is too old to home a Pigeon? If you raise a Pigeon, until they wean/eat on their own, are they permanently homed to that location?
& if you move - do you forever have to keep your bird enclosed???? What if it paired with a local bird - would it stay then? When they pair is it only a seasonal thing or is it for life? Arty i read your reply to Joel about birds returning to their old place even after looking after them for 2 years ......

Those are all good questions and Arty could answer them all. I am curious to know some of the answers myself. I know I am not going to be living here for no more than 2 years. We'll see. I know if I ever moved though, I would NEVER leave Abigail behind.
