Socorro Dove/Extinct in the Wild
Zenaida graysoni
Socorro Dove Zenaida graysoni was formerly a common ground-dwelling frugivore in forests especially above 500 m on Socorro in the Revillagigedo Islands, Mexico, but was last seen there in January 1958 (although it may conceivably survive in small numbers in the remote, unsurveyed north of the island), its decline being attributed to predation by cats, which became established in the 1950s, and perhaps to sheep, which have grazed out the understorey; however, over 200 birds are held captive in the U.S.A. and Europe, and eradications and reintroduction are being planned (Collar et al. 1992, Walter 1993).
