Default sad story

So I get a phone call from the pet store I work part time at... Aparantley some kids came in with a pidgeon that was lop-sided, like it was hit with something. I told them to give it some seed and water and I'd be right there with some baby food and see if I could get a hold of a friend who knows about pidgeons (meaning arty) . I called a few vets, but by the time I got there, the poor birdie had passed on.

My manager thinks it was done on pourpose. Aparantley, some stupid teenage boys showed up at the mall and approached some girls with an injured pidgeon they found, then proceeded to hit on them and make obcene sexual remarks and eventually took off. Even though he was injured, he didnt seem to be bothered by people, so I suspect he was friendly and got too close to the wrong humans.

It really makes me hate people.

When kids get together is when this kind of thing happens. Most, individualy would not do something like that. It's a sad world we live in.

It is hard not to be angry when something like this happens, but anger only hurts. By trying to help the poor thing, you have helped to balance the scales, Josh. Please don't hate people, just keep doing all you can do to change them, and to be a voice for those creatures who have none of their own. People like you, and so many more on this board and elsewhere give me hope, and make me proud to be a part of the human race. Acts of kindness and attempts to do right are never in vain, and do not go unnoticed. Thank you so much for trying to help the little one.

I agree with Susan.....

Friday my youngest son had a sleepover at a friends house. I went to go drop him off and their two boys and two other boys that were staying over were all on the back porch tossing stuff up on the roof!

When I got over there they were throwing things at a pigeon!!!!!!!!

I had a few choice words with them and they proceeded to tell me that they would pick it back up and do it all again after I left.... so I told their mom and dad and they got into a fair bit of trouble.

Well when she called me the next day she told me that one of hers and mine were off playing and the other three including one of hers threw rocks and knocked him off the roof.....!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They will be coming over this weekend to clean ALL of my bird cages and also serving time at the local shelter as punishment.

I have three mac cages that need a GOOD scrubbing and am saving it for them to do with a toothbrush!

As individuals these boys would have never done this..... what is it about a pack mentality that wreaks havoc on animals?

That's a very interesting question, and it isn't only other animals that are at risk. Many horrendous examples of man's inhumanity to man throughout history can be attributed to pack behavior as well.

On a less destructive note, it even makes it difficult for us to relate meaningfully with our birds. Being pack animals (basically) it is hard for us to relate to flock mentality, which is quite different. Causes a lot of misunderstandings.
