P.S. Like many others here, you've helped me to look at Pigeons with new eyes, Arty. In my parking structure here at work many Pigeons fly in and out and they are beautiful (most look very similar to Camille's Mollie). A couple of months ago I was walking up the stairs of the parking structure and on the next level up on the stairwell, the top level, was a Pigeon desperately trying to fly out and away. But that top part of the stairwell is enclosed in glass with a closed door to go outside and I saw the poor thing hit the glass twice. I spent about 30 minutes trying to guide the bird out of the door that I propped open. He/she was actually pretty calm around me and let me approach many times to guide in the right direction, must have sensed that I was trying to help, and I did tell him/her that many times. He/she never went out the door, but I did get him/her to go down the stairs to the lower level where it is open and many Pigeons fly through that level. I most definitely thought of you that day, Arty.

They do know when someone is trying to help them, I find this fact very mysterious but very true.
Thank you very much for reaching out to help the Pigeon during his-her trying time, I am sure you felt a sense of Peace when seeing the bird fly free.
You shine so brightly within my eyes.
In this mans world many will keep on walking by until a light is seen, ONE, "but one stops to help", you are that light and it is you that provides hope to those that need that help so desperately.
I am very pleased you look upon the Pigeon differently, they mean us no harm.
I simply can't thank you enough.

But I've actually thought that my dad might be a good candidate. He lives further out in the country (nearby me) and he watches the wild birds in his yard every day, he has many feeders. He is fascinated by my birds and I've taught him a lot about them. He would still need to learn a LOT about bird care, but I think he might really enjoy something like a Pigeon that he could free fly (he's very much an animal person, very compassionate about them). I haven't brought this up with him at all though, so it's still a very premature thought.
I also wonder about the hawks around here, we have many hawks - how do you guys deal with predators such as those?? |

#10 | | | Re: The Racer from Sturgeon, Mn Here in Minnesota the dreaded Coopers Hawk has taken one of my Pigeons and several other wild birds, Then oneday a Peregine Falcon came to visit and took one of my babies, I almost got my bird back from this preditor but it wasn't meant to be, the falcon was persistent and hungry, the last I saw of my bird was when he flew up and over the neighbors house with the falcon close behind.
Mother's natural food chain can't be broken, all one can do is lock down there loft til the preditor moves on.
The sad reality of free flying your birds.
I battle the stray cat here more than anything, I have live trapped many and done battle with my neighbors, I hand the little menace over to the authorities, if the same cat returns again I catch him-her and take them to a shelter far away from here, hopefully they will be adopted by humans that understand what they do to wildlife and keep the animal safe within there home.
But the Eagle, Falcon, Hawk...Mothers way of keeping all in check, one can only shed tears, or take the freedom of flight away from your birds.
