Default Question for Arty?

Arty, Should I leave seed out all day for Abigail? I heard they only go at there seed a couple of times a day. I have been leaving the seed out and replenishing it. I just do not know when she eats because of the numerous squirrels that go up there by her and eat it too! I noticed she tries to sleep and the squirrels are always disturbing her eating out of her seed dish.

You will eventually have to put up a feeder that the squirrels can't get to.
Out in the open where they can't jump from a tree branch or a fence, a galvenized fence pole will work the best as Squirrels can't climb up them with a flat platform on top with a bird feeder mounted in the middle.
I know....getting out the ladder to fill the feeder is a hassel, this is what I do here, but it works, I also feed the squirrels on the ground....
Abi will eventually stop coming to visit you if you don't take proper meassures, this happened here due to the many squirrels that come here, soon enough just about all the birds decided to go elsewhere to look for seed, then I finally erected a pole and placed squirrel free bird feeders ontop the poles, now many birds come here again.
You will need to put up a feeder as I have described and train Abi to go to that feeder to eat, you can limit your feedings to 2 times per day, but the squirrels will figure those feeding times out and be right there when you do feed Abi...
A 12 foot pole sunk into the ground 3 ft with one bag of cement pour around it, mount a flat 2 ft square platform ontop the pole with a 2 inch ridge around the oustde to help keep the seed secure, maybe even a bird feeder atached located in the middle...walla...no more squirrels, Abi and other birds will be able to be fed in peace.
Thanks for the question, these things will have to be done in order to maintain your relationship with Abi.
Good luck.
Arty

I am going to put in a post and feeder for her when the weather cools. I do not think she will go there though. I see she has her habits here and is very cautious. I will try though. I want to get closer to her but am afraid I will scare her. Although I can get within about 6 inches of her to fill her dish with seed. Can she ever be hand tamed? Is that possible? I do not spend alot of time with her.....she seems to like to be left alone in her secure safe spot.
Arty she is sooooo sweet! Every morning when I go outside after she has flown in, when she first sees me she Coooooo's, soooooo cute!

I was just sitting outside watching Abigail...she is doing something different. She is laying in the gutter on the roof above the canopy. She is pulling pine hay off the roof near her and making a nest I think. She pulls the hay and moves it around and sits on it. I hope she is not gonna lay eggs there, it is in direct sunlight most of the day.
What are your thoughts?

More than likely Abi would never take to being hand tamed, she has lived a life of being free.
As I have said before, its very hard to re-progam these birds.
The nesting aspect, Abi apparently has need for a nest, this doesn't mean she will lay, if she does the eggs will not be furtile as there in no male around, or is there???...LOL
You would see the male if there was one, as much time as Abi spends there.
Is she still leaving at night?
The nest building has me a little baffled, usually the Pigeon will choose a hidden area to nest, not out in the open.
I am assuming Abi still perches up under the eave on the awning?
This is where I would expect her to nest...

Yep, she still leaves at dusk....8:05 promptly every night! She is still laying up in that gutter...funny all I see is her little head sticking out! She is always perched on that canvas awning but it is slanted downward so she never gets to quite relax up there. Maybe that is why she is in the gutter...she can lay flat and the squirrels do not annoy her there. I have not seen another pigeon around so I do not think she is making a nest to lay eggs then just to relax.

That makes sense to me, she has become annoyed by the pestering Squirrels...
Well, its still a mystery where she goes at night, but she always returns in the morning.
You have a very unique situation there Donna.
