#2 | | | Re: Question for Arty? You will eventually have to put up a feeder that the squirrels can't get to.
Out in the open where they can't jump from a tree branch or a fence, a galvenized fence pole will work the best as Squirrels can't climb up them with a flat platform on top with a bird feeder mounted in the middle.
I know....getting out the ladder to fill the feeder is a hassel, this is what I do here, but it works, I also feed the squirrels on the ground....
Abi will eventually stop coming to visit you if you don't take proper meassures, this happened here due to the many squirrels that come here, soon enough just about all the birds decided to go elsewhere to look for seed, then I finally erected a pole and placed squirrel free bird feeders ontop the poles, now many birds come here again.
You will need to put up a feeder as I have described and train Abi to go to that feeder to eat, you can limit your feedings to 2 times per day, but the squirrels will figure those feeding times out and be right there when you do feed Abi...
A 12 foot pole sunk into the ground 3 ft with one bag of cement pour around it, mount a flat 2 ft square platform ontop the pole with a 2 inch ridge around the oustde to help keep the seed secure, maybe even a bird feeder atached located in the middle...walla...no more squirrels, Abi and other birds will be able to be fed in peace.
Thanks for the question, these things will have to be done in order to maintain your relationship with Abi.
Good luck.

#5 | | | Re: Question for Arty? More than likely Abi would never take to being hand tamed, she has lived a life of being free.
As I have said before, its very hard to re-progam these birds.
The nesting aspect, Abi apparently has need for a nest, this doesn't mean she will lay, if she does the eggs will not be furtile as there in no male around, or is there???...LOL
You would see the male if there was one, as much time as Abi spends there.
Is she still leaving at night?
The nest building has me a little baffled, usually the Pigeon will choose a hidden area to nest, not out in the open.
I am assuming Abi still perches up under the eave on the awning?
This is where I would expect her to nest... |
