Default This one is for you Arty!

Look what was brought to the store today and left....

Now what do I do???

And this is where s/he will stay for the night unless you direct me otherwise...

It was found outside hanging out at a person's work for three days.. never flying away, or flying at all for that matter. So they picked it up and brought it in to the store to identify the "parrot" they had found. I fed it, and it ate like it had been days, and it drank quite a bit of water too. It seems to navigate the aviary just fine, flying up to the branches to perch.

What do I do? Do I need to do anything special to get it through the night. The aviary is covered with a sunshade and sort of protected on three sides (many feet away) by the house and 8" deck walls. But it is still fairly exposed. You think if I put a carrier in there it will go in to get out of the weather, should there be undesirable conditions tonight? It has been getting down to 45 - 50 or so at night and 70 - 75 during the day.

Help!

I'm not Arty, but maybe I can help a little. Make sure the water is several inches deep. Pigeons drink like they're sucking through a straw, not like parrots. If he's been living outside for at least the last few days, I'm sure he's pretty well acclimated to the weather. I don't know that he would go into a carrier, but you could always provide him with one so he has the option. I put straw or hay in mine.

Thanks for helping him!

Thanks Camille!! Your advice is as greatly appreciated as Arty's! Anyone with Pidgie experience is welcome to advise! This is a HUGE grey areas for me...

Oh ya.. big deep water bowl and big deep food bowl. He is hooked up with that and has been in both since he has been home. Very hungry and thirsty.

And I will put a carrier out with hay in it right now. S/he is quite the friendly little bird. Coos at me to greet me every time I go out to check. And doesn't have any fear of me. I think it might be someones pet, but I have been wrong before!

Poor thing. He's a big boy, and that coloring around his eyes is really neat! What do you think you're going to do with him?

He loves the carrier stuffed with hay, climbed right in, settled down and seems quite content. I put it up high wedged in a corner between some branches and perches.

I have NO idea what I am going to do with him. I thought I would take it one day at a time. Do YOU have any suggestions?

And yes, he is QUITE large. When I first opened the box to look at him, all I saw was tail and I thought it was a Cockatoo (I was TOLD it was a found parrot!) and then I saw the feet and head. All I could say was "That is one mighty big pigeon!"

Great job, Deb. Sounds like he is content eating, drinking, and safe in his carrier.

That statement got me laughing!! He's very pretty and the set up you've given him looks great.

He looks quite happy to me! I gave my pigeon Mai Tai a basket with paper towels in the bottom that I quick linked to the cage so he wont turn it over.. he gets very protective of his basket now LOLOL I bring sticks in from outside and he moves them around in his basket and loves it!

He is huge, very pretty to, I thought it was a cockatoo at first when the box was opend.

He looks very content there in the flight. We will have to see what Arty has to say. Not sure if he would fly back home if he was a pet or what.
