Should I DNA him? Is there any other way of making sure?

You can tell by his behavior, but it's more difficult when you don't have a basis of comparison. Males strut around a lot and tend to want to dominate everything. Those are the main things I've noticed of my 2 boys. Arty? Any other obvious tells? It may be better to DNA, just so you're sure. If you get 2 males you'll more than likely have to keep them separate at all times. Mine would kill each other if I'd let them...

It is hard to tell there sex, unless there are more pigeons around, the male struts and bows his head in a Charge fassion, he will puff his crop out.
The Female is more submissive, calm cool collective, very little cooing unless its mating time...
I have posted some videos of the male strutting during courtship.
& Camille is right 2 males will be a mistake, they fight to much, a territorial issue.
If ya already have a male, I would reccomend a female, and buy some fake eggs as they will breed often, a mated pair can have up to 6 clutches per year, 2 eggs per clutch and there offspring can start to breed at the age of 6 months..
I would have your new friend DNA'd.
If you decide to add a friend for your bird, ask for a dna to be given to assure.

Thanks Deb - Pigeon ownership is definately on the rise & you surely didn't need another bird!

Hope your Greys understood the lack of outside time - really nice set-up you have there.

Q's: Arty those leg feathers - look like they could fly with their feet. Do they have trouble walking? what about blood feather issues? Do people trim/clip them for every day?
& I adored the 2nd last photo - love that plump white 'utility' King Pigeon! What a physique. Lovely lines & very sweet face.

Honestly I don't know about the leg feathers, I know the birds pictured require much grooming and cleaning to get them in shape for show.
I have done much studying on all breeds, but only keep homers and racers here, My Dunn Lahore was rescued 4 years ago, then I have rescued a few Fantails, but for the most..not to many fancy birds..

That is for sure! But he will be an outside bird and hopefully will be able to come and go as he pleases some day...

Oh, they are still going outside. I have more than one aviary! Now I rotate the birds outside rather than put them all out at one time.

If and when I decide to add another Pigeon, I will be sure to come to you, Arty, and adopt one of your fine friends.
