I got a good look at Abi....no blood anywhere and wing seems to be ok. He was able to fly from the canopy to the roof to the tree. I went to put his water where he is on the canopy now and he pecked at my finger. I am going to remove that box.

I am sorry Donna, I should have mentioned to place the box on the ground, you will only scare Abi by placing the box ontop the canopy.
Using a five sided box, tape a piece of wood "like a piece of 2 by 4 onto the top of the box, place onto the ground, the stick should be just that, a common branch off a tree (a stick), one foot long, tie the string to the area on the stick that will meet the ground and prop the box up, place a pile of seed twords the back of the box (not near the stick).
You will need a long piece of string, the bird should not be able to see you.
Once caught, you should be able to tip the box "a little" to get your hand up under and grab the bird.
It could be "a human" has got close enough to Abi and grabbed a handful of tail feathers and these feathers were pulled out as Abi escaped, we have to remember Abi is not afraid of humans, well atleast until now, there's many possibilities as to what has happened, but Abi does need to be caught and looked over, he is handicapped now and needs to be contained.
I have a link to a picture of a box trap somewhere, I will try and locate it.
Best to keep an eye on Abi from AFAR, we want her to settle down and go into the trap.

Click on the link in this thread.
Containing a Pigeon
I hope this helps, there no need to cut a hole in the top, simply tip the box on its side "a little" enough to get your hand in and corner the bird and grasp well.
If the bird gets away, you will never catch him in a box trap again, so get a good grip on the bird and take him into the house to look him over.
Arty.
Abi will need to be contained until all is back to normal.

Thanx alot Arty, Yikes that contraption I made was really no good. I never did this before so I did not have a clue!
I know exactly where he might go in a trap. I will do it in the morning early. He did fly off at dusk but I did not see him. He could have just gone in the bushes somewhere if he cannot fly good. If I am successful at trapping him I have that shed ready for him. I will keep him in there until his tail feathers grow out. Once they do you will have to instruct me as how to set him free again. After all is done will he still come back here or will he be too spooked?
Thanx again for all your help. I will keep you posted, Donna

I admire your relationship with Abi, Donna that little bird loves you, there is simply no other way to say it.
I wish I knew what has happened to Abi, its a world of speculation, but something has happened, your gut feelings where correct, I am very pleased that Abi wasn't harmed real bad, but what shines is no matter what has happened, Abi has come back to the person he trusts...YOU.
The tail feathers are the birds steering wheel, Abi will have a hard time turning, and landing correctly, this will place him more at risk when it comes to escaping a preditor.
Please don't concern yourself about the box trap you came up with, I knew I had posted the trap somewhere on the forum before, I was very tired, been trying to get my yard work caught up, after working all night long this man needs rest not more work... .
In my opinion, Abi needs to be contained, the feathers will grow back in, this will take time, the shed will work fine, do your best to earn the trust that will be lost during containment, Abi will understand over time why you are caging him, when you feel all is okay, then set Abi free...
Here's your chance to give Abi a kiss and hold him close to your heart.
When all is done, No, I don't think Abi will abandon you, your relationship is to strong.
Oh he may fly off when released, but his love for you will bring him back.
Catch him, hold him close, give him a kiss for me, then allow him to fly in the shed, be careful when entering at exiting the shed, he will try to flee at the slightest chance, be quick about entering and exiting...
The trust, the love...is based & built from AFAR, oneday Abi will allow you to be closer, oneday maybe even a touch, but this should be up to Abi.
For now, its up to you, Abi must be touched and handled, you will only be protecting him until all is back to normal.
Good Luck, My prayers are with you both.
Keep us informed.
Arty.

I am so very fortunate to have found this site and all of the kind hearted and helpful people here. Thanx to eveyone who has helped me with Abi.
I truly appreciate it!
I will keep eveyone updated. There has been rain here all day on and off. Abi is on his canopy and eating very well. Hopefully tomorrow there will be sun so I can set a trap. He was gone after dusk last night and back early this morning. I think he might have been around here during the night somewhere.
I have kept an eye on him all day. Abi has not tried to go on the ground. I think he might be a little leary right now.
I will let everyone know how things progress with my little Love....Bird!
A hug to everyone,
Donna

Hi Donna,
It would really be best not to feed Abi, I know your kind heart tells you to do so but we must remember, Abi will not go under the box trap if you continue to feed him, Abi needs to feel hunger in order to get him contained.
If you trully want to help Abi you must stop the feedings, only offer seed under the box trap, leave a little trail of seed out from under the box, then place a handful up under the box, towards the back of the trap.
There's a bottom line here Donna, Please don't think I am being rudd or un-fair, Abi will fall to a preditor in his current condition, Preditors are everywhere, Its a life of alertness and the ability to get away to survive, Abi can't do this in his current condition.
You will have to use some tuff love right now and only offer seed under the trap or risk loosing Abi forever...its your call!
The main objective here is to contain Abi, keep Abi contained until all his feathers are grown back in, this will help him to be able to get away from preditors, this will give him a fighting chance to return to you everyday, this has to be done Donna.
Please....."for Abi's well being", do not offer seed unless it is under the box trap.
I can't help you to help Abi unless you let me and follow my words.
Take Care
Arty
