Default Arty help !

Ok so my daughter calls me today freaking out ,says she saw a cat running across the street with something in its mouth,so she chased the cat and it dropped what it had in its mouth,it was a bird,So I rush home to aide this little one,and it appears to be a baby dove,I checked him over and don't see any wounds, and he looks fine pretty active.I have never fed a dove before how do I feed him? do you think if I put him with my doves they will feed him as they have had babies before ?
I will take a picture tommorow as I don't have my camera here.
But please how do I feed him? do they eat formula when they are wild? Oh god I hate outdoor cats.

I cant believe your posting this. I just had a stray cat at my back door hissing at my cat. All I can think is why is this cat out there now while I have Benny on the ground somewhere. I hope the little one makes it Barb!

Cat saliva can be deadly to birds, check for open wounds. Do you have any antibiotics?

Arty replied this to me when I thought I would have to take in a baby dove this week. Hope it helps. He said use Kaytee watery

Fill Bennys crop every 5 hrs, okay to let the bird go through the night with no feedings but feed right away in the morning asap....
Hard to judge by using an eye dropper as I power feed here. one plunge and the crop is full, depending on the age of the bird it might take 3 full syringes.
Benny should be fed 3 times per day..

Check the baby well, and wash the bird with dawn dish soap and rinse well.
Pat dry, You will need a syringe and some Kaytee exact baby bird formula.
As Gary has said if there are any open wounds best to treat with Baytril.
& apply neosporin to any open wounds.
Depending on the age will determine the feedings.....
Try the foster thing with the doves, but only after to are completely sure the babies is with NO wounds and washed and rinsed thoughly...
I use a medium syringe, mix the Kaytee with warm water and very runny, fill the syringe half way, hold upright tap on the side to remove all air, press on plunger to remove the air, then place the syringe into the back of the mouth past the vents and fill the crop with one plunge...
3 times per day, assure the crop is empty before the next feeding...using your hands feel the breast, if empty you will feel nothing...
Here's a picture of my syringes...the smaller one is used for real small babies, very young...

You can get these at petshops
Have to go to work.
Good luck

If you use the top syringe...fill the syringe...tap to remove any air...give 3 full syringes per feedings...if you use the bottom (medium sized) fill half way and remove the air...
Very runny...after you have mixed the Katee take a spoon full and tip, it should look like soup....
luke warm...never to hot....or damage will occur to the crop....
Fostering can be hard...make sure the baby is excepted (fully) before leaving the little one in with the doves....Hopefully this will work...lets pray...
Barb, keeping baytril on hand will always benefit you in some way or another.
You can buy it at FOYSPIGEONSUPPLY.COM.....keep refrigerated.
Best to order the injectable kind, you can mix this in with water and syringe into the bird...if you fear injecting it....
Gotta go to work...
Love to both of you
Arty

Your welcome Gary, I hope the mated pair of Doves Barb is caring for will foster this little one....
If not and Barb has to hand feed, there will be 3 things that will be a concern.
The mix will have to be warm and runny
There will have to no air in the sryinge
Place the tip as far as one can into the back of the mouth past the vents, so no formula enters the lungs...
I am sure Barbra will do fine...
Am at work...so better be brief
Take Care
Arty
