Someone is trying to catch Abi, could even be the loft owner or even a stranger, this is whats so hard about hand raised Pigeons, they trust humans and will come within reach distance.
Some (human) has another hand full of tail feathers, this has happened before.
Abi has escaped from some situation, either a loft, or a single pet.
Even if Abi was free flown, he will always return to where he has lived.
I once was given a pair of Doves, one got away from me and sat in the tree for 2 days, finally, I coaxed the little one down within reaching distance, then reached out to grab him and said "gotcha", I ended up with a handful of tail feathers, and the bird flew off.
I was able to get the bird back, but I do believe this is what is happening to Abi.
There is another human in Abi's world, this is the only answer to what is happening.
This will also explain the days that go by without a visit.
Someone is definitely trying to catch Abi elsewhere.
Donna, I don't know what kind of person (other than you) is in Abi's world, this person could have abused Abi, then Abi could have just escaped, but I do know, Abi returns there each and everyday.
Abi is not (banded) ownership is hard to prove and or trace, but believe me, there is another human involved.
I have a very beautiful little baby here (almost fledged).
Mostly white, with black and grey, much like Abi, this bird has never been free flown, I do not know the sex, soon enough the other males in the loft will tell me the sex of this bird.
If this bird turns out to be a hen....do you want her?
You can train her to stay there and free fly, Abi just might mate up with her (if she is a her) and stay to home all the time.
I can snap some photo's if you would like to see this bird.

Arty

You will see a different Abi when something happens.
When Abi fails to return for a few days, you always say, he goes up in the tree, he never goes there anymore....
His tail feathers are missing again....
Abi is saying....are you going to try and catch me toooo?
He is leary right now.....

What I do know for sure, Abi trusts you Donna, he has sat on your head and lap, you could catch him if you wanted to.
Where he is returning to (elsewhere) he knows that person, maybe that person has harmed him in the past, but what is for sure, he doesn't get closed enough to be caught, just close enough to loose some tail feathers and as last time, he hit something and injured his wing while trying to get away.

I can't help but to hurt for Abi, he is torn between two humans.

I don't know the other human.

I do know you!

I sure do wish Abi would stay there with you...ALWAYS!

I know Arty, he acts a little skittish now. I also noticed he is a little dirty especially the back bottom of the tail feathers he has left. I know he was trapped somewhere but they must have let him out. He does not stay here all day anymore for many months now. He eats and flies off somewhere. After he eats from his seed dish on that canopy in the morning I see him setlted on the canopy sleeping....if it were not for all the squirrels chasing him off I do believe he would stay here all day and fly off at dusk like he used to. I think it is time to get a trap and move the squirrels!
You can send me some pics of the new little one you have but right now I am busy with Jenny for the next 8 weeks with her heartworm treatments. She has to be crated 24/7 and only let out to do her business on a leash quick. She has already had three embolisms. I have to keep an eye on her constantly. So right now I have alot on my plate. But yes if everything goes good with Jenny and she recovers I would be interested. That shed will have to be finally converted. No problem with that. That little window is open sometimes in the shed and I see squirrels going in and out. They are relentless when bird seed is around. They go crazy for it and they find it!

Here is a pic of Abi that I just took...looks like he has something going on by his breastbone. Maybe he got into a fight with another bird while he went missing. He now pretty much stays here all day again...going from the canopy to that tree where I first spotted him....Oh, and he no longer coo's when I am around. He acts a little different now. I think he was traumatized wherever he was for those 8 days.

No blood, this is a good sign...
I still would like to get my hands on Abi to see what is going on.
What ever is happening in Abi's world is causing him to hang around your home for longer periods of time, I guess this is what I would wish for anyways.
Thanks for the picture, Abi is wonderful.

I think you should take Arty up on his offer of sending you a buddy for Abi.
