I know what you mean Donna, but you know there's more to it than that. Abi came to visit you of his own free will, but he remained a free spirit, able to come and go as he chose. Perhaps he would have been safe, but would he have been happy? He may not have adapted well to captivity at all. Who knows? Had you trapped him, something still could have happened to him. No one can say what might have been, and no one can say what has happened to Abi. It is in our nature to want to care for and protect those that we love - its one of our best traits. But its also a two-edged sword. Do we have the right to make something captive to protect it from the perils of its natural life?
Abi was undoubtedly feral, or at least preferred to live on his own. He was your friend, but he lived by nature's rules, not ours. I hope and pray that nothing bad has happened to Abi, and would be greatly saddened to find out that he was treated badly by mankind, for which he had affection and a degree of trust. I hope that he flies free, and has managed to find himself a mate of his own species to share his life. Donna, I remember you writing about your efforts to coax him further into your life. He made the decision to remain free, but remain your friend on his terms. I think we have to respect his decision. I will continue to hope that he returns to visit you again. You've experienced something quite special in your relationship with Abi. Rejoice in that, and should you be fated not to meet again, cherish the memories you have of a very special friend. |
