Default Hi there..I'm New

Hi there im new,i met camelotcrazee at petsmart and she told me to come join this site. i have a blue and gold macaw that just turned a year old that I adopted from a friend of the family. he was purchased at a bird store in nj and im waiting to get his paperwork from my friend. I have a goffin that i handfed myself 10 yrs ago. I took my macaw back to the store where he is used to getting groomed and when he came back from getting groomed he started bobbing his head and making baby sounds. I have had him for 2 weeks now an he hasnt done this with me. But now he does this when i go near his cage, and he trys to bob on my fingers if i scratch under his beak. Is this normal ? I called my friend and she said he hasnt done this with them, he was at the vet 8 weeks ago with a clean bill of health. any suggestions ?

Welcome to Parrot Chatter! Yay, Cassie!
I don't know about your B&G, but I'm sure someone else will be along to tell you about that. Again, welcome!

Welcome BlueandGold!! I have a nearly 3 year old B&G named Cooper (he'll turn 3 this coming April -- note to self to update my signature. LOL ). I can't remember when Cooper started bobbing his head and taking my fingers in his beak to bob on, but its been a pretty long while. Thankfully, he has not yet fully regurgitated on my fingers! The only thing that you are describing that is different from what I see Cooper doing is that Cooper does not make any baby sounds. I don't know if there is a chance your guy has regressed or not with all the changes in his life (that sometimes happens). How is he eating? You might want to try giving him some warm soft foods to eat until he fully settles in (its comforting). Things like warm sweet potatoes mashed up in a bowl or some warm oatmeal. You might try giving a call to your vet to ease your mind. I know my vet has answered questions for me over the phone. Keep us posted, ok?

welcome to parrot chatter! my only guess would be a bit of reverting/regressing. i agree with stiz to call your vet, they can make you feel so much better my ivy does that a bit, but she is recently weaned too.

Welcome Bob !! Bob and his wife are moving in three houses down from mine !! Yay !! Now I wont be the only bird nut in the neighborhood : ) Bob like I was telling you although I have hand fed hundreds of birds I havent had anyone ever call the store about a Macaw displaying these behaviors. We had calls about cockatoos regressing but never macaws, so hopefully someone on the board will know the answer : D

Welcome!

Sorry to hear your little one got upset. Sometimes if they get scared they can regress, perhaps something was different at the groomers. I had that happen with Piaui (hy) when I went away on business for a week. He was so insecure when I got home, he would scream if I walked out of the room, he wouldn't eat anything except his mac nuts and he wouldn't play. I worked with him on playing and being more independent and I monitored his food and gave him less mac nuts so that he would learn to eat other foods again. Now he's back to the monkey he should be.

As I said, something night have set him off. Besides the head bobbing are there any other symptoms?
