Default Hello, back to the birds

I have just started raising parrots again--after a twenty seven year interval. I have pairs of Princess Wales, Regent and Barraband parakeets and a single Mulga parakeet (I am looking for a female for him).

The birds are in an aviary (indoors with full spectrum lighting, plants and running water). It is 25' by 10' and 8' high. So, they can fly around.

I am interested in the forum because I realize a lot has changed in all these years about how to care for these birds. I look forward to learning.

Welcome to Parrot Chatter jgee, glad to have you with us! Sounds like you have a great setup, I'd love to see pics of it and your birds. Being unfamiliar with the Mulga, I just looked them up. Very pretty!

Welcome! I second the request for pics of your set up! Sounds wonderful! Would also love to see pics of your birds and hear about them. I'm not very familiar with them. (of course the only bad thing with learning about more bird species is the MBS that comes with it!)

Thank you so much for the warm welcome.

As you can see from my post, I love Polytelis parrots. There are only three in this group--Regents, Barrabands, and Princess parrots. They are all distinctively beautiful. The Regents and Princess parrots have pastel colors; the Barrabands do too, but their throat colors are sharper.

Each of these species have different calls, the Princess having a relatively loud whistle (but not over used). The Regents (Rock Pebblers) are very soft spoken, maybe the quietest of all parrots. In general, all of the Polytelis parrots are quiet. They are non destructive. And, in fact, they are almost naturally tame, especially the Princess parrots. Princess parrots prefer walking to flying.

Rock Pebblers are very gentle birds. They are one of the best fliers of any parrot. Barrabands can be shy but they have wonderful personalities and are very easy going.

They do not use their feet, like many other parrots, to feed and play with things.

If you can find hand raised ones, they make excellent--really the most underrated of all parrots--pets. Here is a very cute video of a Rock Pebbler. In the video, she calls the bird a "he" but it is a female Rock Pebbler.

As one web site says "All members of Polytelis seem to be fearless, gentle, quiet, and most possess a fantastic speaking ability."

Welcome - I look forward to learning from you as I adore the Princess Parrots and don't know anything about the Regents or the Barrabands.
