He's so cute Emily!! Do you have any names in mind yet?

He's probably just a little nervous about his new surroundings. I agree with the comfort feedings. Once he gets more comfortable he won't want them anymore.

More pictures!!

Congrats on your new fid! I know that when Jerry first came home he didn't eat for a couple days just because he was so nervous.

I brought home a new little plet yesterday. He is 3 1/2 months old. Scared senseless, being in a new home environement at all. Yesterday I didnt see him drink or eat anything- the ride home was 3 hours- so I offered him some Harrisons handfeeding formula and he took around 4 ccs.

According to the person I got him from, he has been weaned for at least 2 months. Since around 6 weeks of age. Would it be OK to keep offering him some handfeeding formula as a bonding/comfort thing, or would that cause him to regress? I have heard that some babies get so stressed they will regress back to handfeeding once in their new home.
This is my first baby, so I just want to make sure I am doing everything OK.
Hi Freedomoflight and welcome. Congrats on the baby he's very cute. I wanted to add that sleep is really important for Parrotlets as much dark quiet sleep as you can give overnight. Not enough sleep is enough to change their whole personalities all day.

Although we follow a strict natural daylight schedule mine get at least 11-12 hours even last summer when the days were short. I used blackout drapes. Right now they retire about 5 pm and get up around 7.

Did she give you the same food she was feeding?

Both mine were very enthusiastic about fresh foods so don't be afraid to offer them. The trick may be to get him to try but you never know. Chopped small like food processor size and sweet or even red peppers. I used Goldenfeast Gardenflora soaked out of curiosity the very first day, and Piper was rolling around in it in heaven. Then I went to the store and the food fest began! They LOVE FOOD.

It's not unusual but I agree they are so small you cant risk him being off feed.

You dont have covered cups do you? Parrotlets wont use them for some reason. And I'd put them up right next to where he is hanging out.

If I can help any other way feel free to ask, they are scary at first, so small. (till they get their confidence lol)

Sorry I should have said check out Goldenfeast they make alot of small size foods. Australian Blend, Petite Treat, Small Hookbill Legume, Fruit Pudding is a big favorite. I feed Volkman Parrotlet seed too, and alot of fresh. They love visiting all the treat cups with different things in there. Small Hookbill Legume seems to be number one.

Hi Cindy
No, no covered cups. I have 3 cups placed thorughout the cage at different levels, so he can eat out of whichever he feels comfortable. Also 2 water cups and a bottle.

For some unknown reason I did not recieve the type of food he was on- I ran to the petstore and grabbed the one that looked closest to what was in his food dish when I picked him up. I plan on mixing some pellets and dried fruit in. He is in a small california cage- its about 18 by 20 square. Last night he got about 11 hours of uninterrupted sleep- he is currently located in my room, and I am covering him with a dark colored sheet.
Tonight I offered some mashed up sweet potato, but he looks uninterested so far. Same with the grapes, lol. I bet once he gets settled in he will start eating like a little pig (I hope!)

Camille- his name is Tahoe. He looks exactly like the waters of Lake Tahoe.

Moving into a new home is stressful for birds. Some of my tiels didn't eat for three days when they first arrived, and I've heard the same thing from others. Apart from the nutrition factor, handfeeding has a huge comfort factor and will probably help your baby settle in faster.

Congrats, Emily! Tahoe is so adorable-very clever name too! Don't worry, Chaska didn't eat her first day with me either, you should see the little piglet now! They just get nervous when they move to a new home.
