#1 | | | Parrotchatter's First Anniversary Member of the Year! So very proud to announce HOMEBIRD (Jac) as Parrotchatter’s First Anniversary Member of the Year! Join me in congratulating HOMEBIRD! Jac has been an active member with Parrotchatter since we opened and has averaged 4.77 posts per day. The nominees were asked to answer questions for consideration by the management team. How did you find PC? ~ I was encouraged to come here by other members when I was uncertain if I wanted to join another bird group. It was pointed out to me that this was a group of serious bird people who wanted a board focused on education & a better life for our birds. Describe your flock. ~ My flock is very small - it is 'all about 2 Budgies' at my place. Laker came from a shelter as my husband & I feel strongly about rescue. Rio was a surprise. I found him on the internet when I was looking at ads for birds that needed a new home. Of course people who breed birds use this site as well. He came from a very nice home based breeder. I have some experience with Tiels because of my parent's birds. When and how did you become interested in birds? ~ I loved all creatures since I was small. I spent many years on a small farm & started with a pet Crow & a pet Duck. My parents had Finches, Canaries & a lone Budgie. When my mother was in a continuing care facility I was fascinated by a Bourke's Parakeet that resided there. It rekindled my interest in a very big way. I wanted to steal that bird very badly & still think about it. I finally got my 1st bird only 1 1/2 years ago! Laker is my 1st parrot & he's perfect in every way. Until recently I didn't have a lifestyle that seemed good enough for a bird. My varied work hours & traveling was hard enough on my cats. The cats were also a consideration. How has your interest in birds changed your life? ~ Even before I got Laker I spent many years, probably about 6, reading everything I could about parrots & other birds that are kept as a pet. I found it fascinating & I was surprised at all the articles there were & so much to learn. I'm a big reader but this intense. Our birds have brought a lot of laughter & closeness into our family. We lost our dear cat last year & knew she was going. The sad times are not so sad when a silly & beautiful Budgie is chattering. What do your friends and family think of your flock? ~ My family have always had to put up with my passion for animals. My friends are really surprised I got birds. They are in wonder when they visit. They are not used to them as pets & find them fascinating. Having flighted Budgies really surprised them as well, as most people only see them in cages. How and how often do you bathe your birds? ~ So far my birds get a spray bath a few times a week. In the summer they might get one every day - out in the balcony & dry in the sun. I mist them to help them through molts as well. Describe any toys you have made for your birds. ~ This is one thing I really love to do. I like natural materials best. I have made toys from corn husks, grape vines & willow & grasses. Do you take your birds outside, if so how? Cages, carrier, harness, other… ~ I was lucky to get a carrier this winter & will try it out this spring. I've always moaned about the Budgie not being what you call a great shoulder bird -although they're great in our home, I'd never try to take them outside without a cage or carrier. Do you cook/bake for your birds? If so, what? ~ I share my lunch noodles & veggies with my birds. I share my baked goods too. I have made them bird cakes but the local Pigeons enjoyed them more. A lot of my baked goods find their way to the local Pigeons along with bought seeds. What treats/snacks/specialty foods do you feed your bird? ...well the most interesting snacks I have for my 2 Budgies are the sprouts & fresh green grasses I gather. They go crazy for them. How do you play or interact with your bird? ~ I work from my home so I spend almost all day with my birds. We got a 2nd Budgie because of course I do go out & sometimes my work keeps me away from home & we didn't want him lonely or frighted. It has worked out really well. They both call out to me when I come home & are 'very' happy to see me, if I'm gone for a long while. Laker especially is a major shoulder parrot on those times. When we had only one bird we trained him & this was a great time. We all enjoyed it & he really thrived. Our new bird has not reached this level & has in effect hampered any training with him in the room. We have high hopes this year of working with him as well.
