#4 | | | Re: ALL OTHER PETS photo contest! This is my little Rascal. This is how she looked when we rescued her. She was to be euthanized the next day. Underneath all that hair was a purebred miniature schnauzer.
She is the smartest dog that has ever owned us.
Almost every day for 5 years she visited the dementia unit where my dad lived. The residents on the floor didn't know if they had eaten lunch but they remembered Rascal's name. She would jump in their laps and beg for constant scratching. She was the one thing that put a smile on my dad's face.
Rascal lights up everyone's world. |

So, don't let the sweet and innocent look fool you. This girl is always on the lookout. But I am ahead of myself. My name is Julie, I am a tough girl from the Jersey 'hood. Mom got run over when I was just a kit, and my sister and I grew up behind Texas Weiner on Route 22. My sister Sugar lives down in Metuchen; she still does the big hair thing, I am SO over that. Some lady caught us in a trap and took me up to Dr. Frank, who gave me to my two-legged Mom. Aside from having all these birds and being from California (I could hardly understand her when I first met her), she is ok. She moved us a long way from Sugar and the rest of my peeps, but there is a lot of sun here and I don't really want to go wandering out and about, so it is all good with me! |

This is Haku, she is an Japanese Spitz (american eskimo) dog. I one day walked into PetSmart to buy a bird toy, and I walked out with a dog. This happened because a woman was walking a cute little fluffy dog and I said "Oh, that's a cute dog". The lady asked if I wanted it, and I, startled, said no, I didn't need a dog. I had a dear Shetland Sheepdog pass away a few years previously. She was 12 yrs old and had been killed by another dog. I didn't want any more dogs. The lady went on to tell me this dog's story, and it was heartbreaking. A man had turned this dog and another dog like her, plus two cats, loose in a park. I don't know what happened to the cats, but the other dog got killed (we think they drowned it in the creek) and this was the only one left. She survived in the park for a month, and through the tail end of a hurricane. The animal control couldn't catch her, so they gave up. This woman lured the dog into her car with hot dog. She asked animal control if they wanted Haku but they said no. In the lady's house, however, Haku (AKA "Baby Dog" as she was called in that household) was being harassed by the woman's German Shepard dog. I adopted that dog the very same day. |
