Default My Red Rumps

So, Ollie, my Red-Rumped Parakeet is 6 months old. I brought home his sister (from another clutch, she's weaned but I don't have an exact hatch date) and they are living in the same cage. They get along well and she is almost as sweet as he is.

My question is that since I have put them in the same cage (yesterday), he has gotten bitey and very protective of her. It's the first time he's ever bitten me. He is definitely my most loving and sweetest bird. Is this a bad sign? I don't want to lose my baby.

IME while all birds like having buddies, new babies fare better when they worked with individually..Especially keets..If your cage had a divider that might work...I would keep them seperate for awhile longer...But then again if they have only been together a day, you could give them more time and see how that pans out. If he is still bitey you always have the option of seperating them : ) I hope this helps and please post some pics of your new babies !! And welcome to PC !!

I personally would keep his sister in a seperate cage. What if your birds bond very closely and try and start a family in that cage as she matures? Being they are brother and sister that would be a bad thing. They may also bond so closely that they would prefer the company of each other instead of you. I would keep them in seperate cages.

Thank you. I will try to get some pictures taken of the babies tomorrow ... or today?

I've heard mixed reviews. They are still together. Ollie seems much happier and doesn't cry when I go to work now. He's a little nippy (as you probably know Red Rumps nipping is more funny than anything, it doesn't hurt at all) when she's out with him but not when he's with me by himself. He's still talking, giving me kisses and they sleep side by side.

Formerly alone (her clutch-mate died early on), Kali seems to be quite content as well. She loves her toys, food and Ollie and is eating and drinking well. So far no problems. I will keep an eye on them and get her another cage if necessary but I think they are a good match. I don't have a divider. They are in the top cage of a three tier stacking unit, my Parrotlets are in the bottom two cages. I don't know much about breeding but I don't have anything in there that they could nest with and I have their full spectrum lighting on a timer. Kali is probably I would guess 10-12 weeks old?

I can say that I LOVE watching them together. They're so adorable. She's like a mirror image of him, just a different color. Much different from my Parrotlets who are completely different from each other in behavior and demeanor. Ollie is very affectionate and Kali seems to be picking that up and immitates him. Ollie gives me kisses... Kali gives me kisses. Gotta love them, eh?

Sounds good! Don't get to hear a lot about many of the Grass Parrots, so anything you can share about them is appreciated. We really do need pics too!

Yes photos!

I have to agree about not breeding brother with sister - too bad they are related. - looks like you will have to get another pair from somewhere else & match them to the ones you have. The more the merrier.

I'm am sorry if you misunderstood a previous post. I am NOT breeding them. As much as I love Red Rumps, two are enough for me.

They're both beautiful! I loved the bathing photos of Ollie. What a doll. Please tell us about their personalities.
