They're so cute! Why are their colorings so different? Is it a gender difference, or will Kali change when she molts?

They are both beautiful, and I'm intrigued by their color difference as well.

Thanks. Ollie is a male and only the male Red Rumps actually get a red rump and the different colors. Kali is a female and females stay a dull green color.

My question is that since I have put them in the same cage (yesterday), he has gotten bitey and very protective of her. It's the first time he's ever bitten me. He is definitely my most loving and sweetest bird. Is this a bad sign? I don't want to lose my baby.
Curious as to why you brought home his sister from another clutch instead of an unrelated female?

I agree with Deb 76.

IMO it is not a good idea to have them totally bond now and later separate them. Also, I personally am saddened that even fertile eggs of related birds would be thrown in the trash - so to speak.

I hope they do Ok without breeding but that may be very difficult.

They're sure pretty birds - the male is very beautiful - loved the bathing photos. The female is very sweet & was a surprise, as i'd forgotten that some birds are sexually different, as so many are hard to tell apart.

What a couple of beauties! About how large are they? Love the coloration differences.

The only breeding pair in this town produced three babies. Ollie was the only one from the first clutch. Kali was the only one out of the second clutch (of two) that survived.

Thanks for your opinion. I have no idea what you're talking about regarding throwing away fertile eggs. My birds have no eggs and are not breeding. I'm not sure how to make that more clear. I am NOT BREEDING them.

You are welcome.

They will most likely be breeding/mating in time, if you keep them together. If you plan on separating them before they start to mate, then that may cause them a lot of stress once they have totally bonded - which is not good IMO. So why even put them through that. Might have been a better idea to have purchased an unrelated female from another town or even have one shipped to you, if you must have a female of the same species for his playmate.

Ollie weighs 50 grams and I'm guessing Kali weighs about the same. My new scale is on order and should hopefully be here tomorrow so I can weigh her. They are not much heavier than a Parrotlet, just a little wider and taller but it's mostly feathers.

I own and breed the parents of Ollie and Kali.

RED RUMPS DO NOT BREED UNLESS YOU PROVIDE THEM WITH A NEST BOX.

They are even hard to breed WITH a nest box.

Please stop bashing Andrea for keeping two birds together. Just because you have two birds living together of the opposite sex does not mean there will be eggs or you will loose them as pets. I have a pair of cockatiels that live together and have not laid eggs in over 2 years BECAUSE I DON'T GIVE THEM A NEST BOX TO LAY EGGS IN. Most of my birds are kept in pairs and are all GREAT pets.

I have never seen Red Rumps lay eggs on a cage floor. Please, if there is a grass parakeet (red rump in particular) expert out there, please provide us with advice. Otherwise, I think I know more about red rumps than most people since I have been keeping them and breeding them for years.
