#11 | | | Re: Sick :( Thank you for you responce, yes, if you know how to hand feed safely then please do so.
You do not mention the birds throwing up, so its safe to say they are keeping down what little they maybe be eating, hand feeding (I would do).
You mention your other bird becoming ill, this tells me there's something happening within the home.
Hows your water source?, we humans can tolerate a certain amount of bacteria found in most common tap water, birds can't, best to boil your tap water and let stand 24 hours before offering it to your little friends, or maybe begin to (if you aren't already) offering bottled water.
It will always be best to store the boiled water in a glass container.
There's a certain amount of stress the bird will endure during handfeeding, this is why I power feed here, place the tip of the syringe into the back of the throat area and (one plunge) fill the crop.
Get in-get out type of situation, this is why I ask what size of syringe you have, If you are using a small syringe then offer a full syringe and feel the crop, if it feels like it could use more than give maybe a half syringe, be sure the crop is completely empty in between each feeding...but then you knows this....
I am pleased the birds are getting the right dosage, you are doing a great job.
Please know you are doing all that you can, again, I am not a vet simply a certified rescue rehabber whom has been around the block a few times.
Everyone who has responded has offered very sound advice, if possible dilute some gatorade 50 50 and use to mix the formula.
If you do not have any Gatorade on hand please boil some water and let stand for 24 hrs, add a pinch of salt and a pinch of sugar to one cup of water, stir well and use this when mixing the formula.
Please let us know how things are going, we will help if we can.
Peace

#12 | | | Re: Sick :( Instant Ounces Emergency Food For Birds
When an emergency strikes be ready with Instant ounces. Instant Ounces contains essential nutrients, enzymes, vitamins, minerals, calories and electrolytes, and is a must for baby birds not gaining weight. High calorie, low fat, emergency powder supplies much needed energy and nutrition for injured, sick or newly-hatched birds. Instant Ounces can be mixed with medication, hand feeding formula or other soft foods.
I have not used this myself, but I have heard only good things about it.
Once the baytril course is finished, please DO NOT stop before the end, yogurt adds good bacteria. ACV in the water once a week may also be a good idea if the water is a problem. I don't think that ACV and rehydrates can be mixed together but I don't know.
Have they been tested for giardia? What does the poop look like, or what did it look like before dehydration? Just a thought, not a vet. Giardia in Birds |
