Default Poicephalus + ??

Hi all,
My partner and I are owned by a cuddly, clownish Meyer's named Grinch (12 years old and happily healthy). We are thinking about adding another feathered member to our family. Any recommendations about what birds would go w/ a Poicephalus? Could those who've integrated a second parrot give some advice about what it is like to add to your feathered family? I should add that Grinch is well-named; he's usually sweet, but occasionally has an attitude.

Note: our initial choice was a Goffin's, but I was (sadly) allergic to the dander. Thus, 'tiels are probably out as well (we had a pair when we first met, and I never understood why I was always sneezing).

Thanks,
Grinch's Mom

Hi Grinch's Mom, Welcome to Parrot Chatter! Nice to have you here! Grinch is just lovely.

I don't have any recommendations of what species would be good to add, but I'm sure someone will be along shortly that can help you out.

When I added a second parrot here I had some jealousy issues that we had to work through. I had an only child for a year, so he had to get used to sharing me. My two are just visual friends though, they don't play together but yet if I take one away from the other they contact call. So that makes me think they enjoy each other's company but just don't want to share their personal space.

Other than that, it's been double the work, double the trouble they can get into and double the fun!!!

as I have a Sennie along with 3 other birds I have to say she hasn't integrated with any of them. lol In fact most days Zoey seems she would be perfectly happy if they would all go away and she could have me all to her self again.

Hi, and welcome to Parrot Chatter, its great to have you with us! I also have a Poi (Red Bellied), along with a Green Cheeked Conure and a DYH Amazon. I have to go along with Jim's assessment. Tausi, my Red Bellied, could care less about the other birds, other than joining them in flock noises. I'm pretty sure he'd be just as happy if they weren't around. My advice is if you want to get another bird, do it for you, and not him. Also plan on keeping them separated, and be pleasantly surprised if it works out that they get along. But don't count on it!

Welcome to PC !! I have a senegal and an african ringneck living together in their own room. They love each other to death and dont make a move unless the other one is underfoot !! My senegal also enjoys the company of my severe, ekkie's, and RB2...I would go with a bird of similar size...My jardine "Jar Jar" is very lovey towards everyone and my other birds including my senegal..poor little guy trys to make friends with everyone to no avail..lol- Hope this helps : )

Welcome to Parrotchatter, we have a great group of experienced members owned by their birds! I agree with Nate, in my experience whatever bird you get you take a chance on either Grinch not bonding to your new addition or your new addition not bonding to Grinch. They may bond, and if you do decide to add another bird, introducing them slowing and allowing them to interact at their own pace in my experience works best.

Hi
I don't have one but may have a Sennie in the future. I've asked this question a few times myself. The answer usually is no - most Pois are happier as only birds. But as was mentioned already you can get lucky - but don't count on it. It's probably best to get a 2nd bird that can hold its own or be able to get away form any 'fighting' that might happen, as in an aviary or large room setting. Jealously issues may arise so another cage is a good idea. [even our Budgies were/are jealous of the other] If you are looking to offer companionship [but no contact] with another creature you might even look into Canaries or other song birds - have you thought of this?

I thought the idea of an IRN companion was very interesting.

I hope you can adopt - perhaps you will meet another bird [thru a club etc] that immediately connects to you & yours. From my limited experience - introducing a baby to a mature bird can be frustrating for the adult but eventually resolvable.
