Default Meyer's anyone?

Hey everyone! I realllllyyy love the Meyers and am thinking of getting one sometime soon. I have been reading about them online now for a long time, not to mention I have been reading books on the poi group for months, and after getting to meet a Meyers and spend a bit of time with them (hearing their call too), I have decided that, that would be my next bird.

So does anyone here have a meyers? I'd like to hear from you guys about your Meyers or Pois...(senegal, red-bellie, brown headed, etc.).

any info of your experiences will be much appreciated! I just want to be well researched before I go into anyting.

Talking Re: Meyer's anyone?

Thank you! actually It's quite funny, I never planned for their names to all start with S's.. And I only learned of Sellie's name after I decided to get him, lol! Strange how things work sometimes?

I will also add your Ruby Is also so beautiful, I love Macaw's! All of them are so cool, they are just a little too expensive and a little to time consuming for me right now... but in the future ... though I like the mini's like the noble and the yellow collard macaws (wow! good size for me, but still a little too pricey).
This is how I came to decide (partially) on a Meyer's.

I am owned by a meyers. Cuddles just turned 3 in Jan. I have had her since she was 4 months old. Cuddles name says it all! my husband and I went to a bird fair in GR,MI. looking around,of course. We come upon an area that had several sennies, red bellies and down the way was a meyers. I held it and the baby crawled under my chin and fell asleep. Kris( the person selling) said that was the first time in 2 days that the little one had actually relaxed with someone. At the time the baby was only 2 1/2 months old and still being hand fed. My hubby and I talked it over and wandered around went back to hold the baby again. We decided then she was ours. Of course had to wait till she was fully weaned. I drove down to Ohio to pick her up. Cuddles still is a "Cuddle Bug".

awww! cuddles sounds so sweet!

I have to share today's adventure's!!!
So not very far from me there is a lady who has a bird store, and she also adopts out birds-and takes in any 'unwanted' birds and helps them find good homes.
I went there and she had a meyers there, she is 16 years old, and was mistreated in her previous home. She really loves head scratches, but is terrified of hands near her feet therefore if you get too close she'll lunge at you. Well I decided to try and scratch her- she really loved it, but after a few min. of head scritiches I forgot to stay clear of her feet O.O oops, I went under her chin and she moved near her feet and then... she lunged at me and got me 2x, broke through the sikn deep... ouch-lesson learned! It was my fault completely, and I feel bad for those birds who have gone through some bad homes..
She still has a ways to go though.

I love Poi's! Tausi, my Red Bellied, is a real sweetheart, and a pretty good talker to boot. When I found him I was actually looking for a Meyers, but happened to run across him instead. I also met a male Sennie in a pet store once, and he had an amazing vocabulary and was very friendly. JP's female Sennie Zoey is fiercely devoted to him, but I gather isn't crazy about anyone else. They all have their own personalities, and I gather there are some traits that make Meyers different from Red Bellieds, and Red Bellieds different than Sennies, etc. I've also read and heard really good things about Jardines and their 'Jattitude'! Poi's rock!

Default Re: Meyer's anyone?

I was actually considering a Senegal because they are not so expensive..... ya know... lol But I am worried at it becoming a one-person bird. of course any bird has the potential of becoming a one person bird, but are Sennies very prone to doing that or might I have a chance?

I really like the Poi group and Have read a lot on it, and I decided my choices to fit my life-style/$$/time/routine etc. would be either meyers, senegal, red-bellie, or brown-headed. but narrowing it down further because of cost, brown-heads are hard to come by(not to mention $$), and the only red-bellie breeder near me sells them for $500. O.O
where as I can get a senegal or meyers from $250-$350+.

What do you guys think?

Too bad.. though right now, I can't take in another bird yet. Shadow the tiel, she has been a bit sick and we ended taking her to the vet.. and well she's doing better, but we ended up paying a lot more than what I expected, and I don't think it would be fair to bring a new bird into the house when we've got a sick one. It wouldn't be fair to anyone. So until everyone is healthy, I won't be getting one anytime soon.

Thats why I have been gone too lol. I would and will also consider adopting first too though.
