Default Teething Macaw?

So, Jewel is about 9 months old now. She doesnt bite per say, but latly she does a lot of grabbing with her beak and squeezing the hell out of ya.

Durring scritches or cuddle time, she grabs your finger with her beak and pinches really hard. Its not agressive, it seems playful, but it hurts. The only way I can describe it is the way a puppy nips when teething.

She also tries the same thing with my nose.

Is this normal? Any way to discourage it?

ivy does that sometimes. if she ever bites down too hard, i shake my hand quickly to make her let go. she seems to get the picture and is much more gentle the next time. i wouldn't let her near my face, except for kisses. too much of a chance of injury, even if it's unintentional.

My B&G macaw, Doc, is 7 months old and will do the same thing when he gets really excited. If I touch his tail he'll let go. Don't grab it or anything just simply touch it with your fingertips.

Ruby did and now sometimes does the same thing. I had little bruises all up and down my arms. She loves to be outside best of all, so if she did it when we were outside I would go inside. Now all I have to do is say "do you want to go INSIDE???" She lets go real fast! ha!

When Ollie does this I just say "no" and either put her down or give her something more appropriate to put in her beak. You don't want it to become a habit or something that they think is okay.

When the suns do this I just give a toy to chew. They don't know the strength of the beak right now.

Ryan used to do that too Josh. I would just tell him no, give my arm a little shake and then give him something to chew on. He broke out of that pretty quickly, thank God.
