Default Scarlets

Kathie- here is my expierience with my scarlet. She is my favorite bird personality wise in the house. That being said she is a handful. LOL she is really really smart, and is the comedian of the group. She loves to lunge at my hands, and she will stop just as she touches them and say "ouch!" or "ah-ah-ah" then she laughs. She has learned every phrase or trick that the other birds do for attention. Stevie my Ruby macaw plays peek-a-boo, putting her foot up infront of her face and pulling it down. So now Groovy does that and says "peeeek-a booo" , Stevie puts her wings up when asked, so now groovy says "put 'em up " and puts them up then yells "whoo-hooo". They are IMO the smartest of the macaws, and they need a ton of attention and stimulation. Theyalso tend to be one person birds (mine HATES my hubby LOL) They are deffinatly NOT the right macaw for everyone.

Thanks for the info. I had the same experience with mine. I told these folks they can be one person birds, and they have children, but she insists her macaw forum has told her differently. I'll pass this on to her. I guess I can only do so much. I told them they are falling in love with a baby macaw whose personality has not developed fully. They have a blue throated macaw that they bought from us who is just wonderful. I fear they might not have as good of an experience with this one, although they both work from home and are there all day - maybe that will make a difference?

Your fids sound adorable!

I love my Ceilidh! He is my favorite personality in the house, too. He is inquisitive, loving, smart, and he doesn't miss a thing! He is also a one person bird, although he remembers a friend of mine and likes her, too. Including my own Ceilidh, I know two other Scarlets fairly well, and I think they're fantastic birds! Once you've been loved by one, life will never be the same.

If they think they are getting anything close to a Blue-throat they are CRAZY. My BTM Bonnie is a puppy with feathers. Sweet and will go to just about everyone including my kids. Both birds came from the same wonderful breeder...TOTALLY different birds like night and day.

We don't own a Scarlet but I can tell you that they are nothing like a BTM. I think Jodi got her birds from the same breeder as we got our Oscar. Her Scarlet and our Oscar might have been pals but I could be wrong. As stated above our Oscar goes to everybody includeing kids dogs you name it he wants to be pals Out of the scarlets i have personally meet none have actually liked me so its hard to say,but i do know how smart they are and they also know it lol.

All I can say is: I warned them! They are listening to the people on this macaw forum who are saying they absolutely love their Scarlets. I asked the ages of the Scarlets "in question" and she said they were all different ages.

I hope all goes well for them. Their BTM, Piccasso, is a dollbaby. I can actually put him on his back and balance him on the top of my head. He will stay there until I take him off. (No, I don't have too much time on my hands at the store - I just fell in love with this little gem - don't ask me what made me do this!)

They did agree NOT to take her home right away and come in for 4 weeks to visit (they come every day).

Really? That's funny - thought you would think I was half a nut. They are just so petite and sweet. Great little birds.

We had a house party one night will a group of all ages. Our BTM was passed high and low, one to the other laying on his back! My scarlets are dollbabies, but they will not do that!

Cosmo is not as friendly as my Sammi - she's a lesser sulfur crested cockatoo. I can handle Cosmo as long as my husband is not around, if Ed is within sight Cosmo will lunge at me with full intent of removing my nose or a finger! My daughter can't go anywhere near him, as a matter of fact to give you a glimpse of his personality. Cosmo's stand is at the bottom of our steps, he will hear Alyssa starting to come down the hallway, just as she comes within sight, Cosmo lets out a scream and then Alyssa screams! He does it on purpose! You can just about see his tail feathers quiver with laughter!

He was just 2 last September so his vocabulary is building. One thing I think is amazing is he has 2 distinct voices - mine and Ed's! He will laugh like me and he will laugh like Ed. He has words he has picked up from me that he says in a higher voice and words that he has picked up from Ed using a lower voice.

My computer stand is right by his cage, he will pick up food in one foot and try to hit me with it! Of course, he won't do this when Ed is around!

He also likes to lure the dogs over to his stand, he will then climb down a toy so he is hanging in the lowest place possible and try to bite the dogs!

He is quite a character but I would say that a scarlet is not for everyone! He is very nippy and can be very loud.
