Our first macaw was a cute little Yellow Collar which we rescued from a bird store where he was biting everyone who tried to get him out of his cage including the staff! We took him in, built trust (after bloody bites), and socialized him. We became enamored with the little guy, he is cute, very active, independent and socialized easily (after the bites!). We did research on macaws and learned that they have the type of personality that fits into our lifestyle. They loved to be loved, but are flexible, independent and active which we enjoy. We learned that we really enjoy the large macaws as well, some we rescued, some came to us as babies, and some we added because we just love those macaws!

We really do have alot in common .Our first experence was also being owned by a mini. Our severe Rascal. Kinda the same as yours but a baby. He is amazing in that he just thinks he can wup everybody in the house lol. We feel the same as you about them being way more independant and very able to entertain themselves in our absence. My first love was a GW that I let slip thru my hands twice Thats a real love story i'll save for another thread though. But it was my first experence with GW love and as you know there's nothing quite like that

My first GW, Kady chose me.

As a Pet Sitter I have cared for many Budgies, Tiels, Greys, Alexandrines, Ekkies, Cockatoos, Scarlets, Greenwings & Hyacinths. I wasn't looking for a bird and didn't have any plans to own a bird.

During an assignment at a breeders home, I walked into the first bird room and there sat this GW that was new to the living situation there.

In all my years and all my years of pet care, this had never happened before, it was a surreal experience. He looked into my eyes and literally talked to my soul. He needed me and the rest is history.

I brought Murray home due to his bad living conditions where he was. Murray nor macaws has never been on my list of birds to bring home, but we got him out of the place he was and our intentions were to work with him and teach him the basics, analyse the situation and find a home for him. We accidently fell in love along the way and he and I just click and we work well together. But, re-homing him is still not out of the question. Freddie and I have been looking at buying a new home and have found one we'll be pursuing more aggressively and are doing this for the birds and especially for Murray. We need something bigger and for more room (or rooms) for Murray.

Large macaws require alot of space to play that's for sure. We provide numerous rings and gyms for them to hop or fly to. Keeps them off the windows!

How do you keep them from flying into the windows? We have ours flighted at the moment but have had several collisions with the picture windows and dining room window as well.No injurys but it did shake us up a little bit.
Lara, we have 2 rehomed Gw's also and they just melted our hearts. Would enjoy pics of him and more of how your making out with him.It seems to be a really slow process but so much worth the wait.

We have Hunter Douglas shadow blinds in some of our rooms which lets in the light, but are soft if a bird flew into them. In our other rooms we either have a huge play gym or large macaw cages in front of the windows out 1 - 2 feet from the window. They fly to the gyms or cage tops. You can get the Bird Safe decals too so you can see out but birds see the leaves.

Actually, my first choice was a baby M2 girl. While we were waiting for our tax refunds, we also met Bob. Even back then, Bob didn't cotton to strangers, but after a month or so he changed his mind and started regurgitating for me. Then one day I walked in, and the M2 girl was sold. So that sealed it for me, and we purchased Bob. It was the best choice I ever made--not only do I adore my strikingly BEAUTIFUL blue and gold Goon, but it turns out I'm deathly allergic to cockatoos, nowadays.

I think Macaws combine the best of everything--they're beautiful, smart, fun, active and loving. I can't imagine living life without them.

I fell in love with their beauty, then got to know a few.... the rest was fate!

We just click. I love macaw personalities. Independant, yet loving. Loyal, affectionate, mischevious, outspoken and thoughtful. So smart.
