Default Jack....

broke a blood feather tonight when John tried to get him out of his cage. I was in the other room getting yelled at by Nicky and I heard the commotion and John's calling me. It was easy to find the feather, the first pull didn't pull it out, I got a better grip and got it on the second try. He was so upset. I cuddled with him for about 10 minutes then passed him off to John because I had to fix a new snack dish...the first one I fixed got knocked on the floor.

Jack (I keep calling him Jack so I have a feeling were going to keep his name that rather than Burton) has his vet appointment tomorrow afternoon. Yesterday we did everyones nails & beaks except for Jack, I figured let the vet do that.

Great job handling the crisis, Jeanne! Poor guy, I bet the cuddle time did wonders to make it all better.

Good job Jean. I have never had to pull a blood feather and I'm not looking forward to that day either. Hopefully all was forgiven with some snuggling and some snacks! I like the name Jack.

Pulling a blood feather is VERY stressful. We had to do that here once for Barney, our Buffons.

the first time I ever pulled one was with Budgie (scarlet macaw) last year. I was terrified. Now as long as the person holding the bird has a good grip ...you find the feather, get a good grip and pull as close to the tip/end (I refer to the end being as close to the body as possible) and pull.

Jack doesn't seem to like John and will calm down quicker for me.

I'm absolutely dreading the day that I have to pull my first blood feather. You handled the crisis very well! Now if only I can be that calm...

Broken blood feathers are one of those things that scares me to death. I usually go running to a friend, who is kind enough (and has a ton of experience doing it) to pull the offending feather. Birds, for some reason, seem to bleed a LOT for such relatively small creatures....
