Default Ivy, Day 2 Continued

well, today was a bit rough on everyone i think. ivy has been calling on and off throughout the day. her scream actually isn't that bad, but it's very startling. so both of our dogs jump every time! still haven't gotten her to eat much of anything aside from her mac nuts. she had a few spoonfuls of banana which was VERY entertaining. she seems completely less than interested in her pellets. tried some fresh veggies on a plate tonight, no interest. had a hard time trying to get her to come out of the cage to eat at the table, so we fed her inside. or tried to, at least.

my husband and i were rearranging her cage a little bit tonight. had her on her playstand. all of a sudden, she FLEW up to the top of her cage! i was very surprised and pretty happy that she still has a a little flight in her. we took her into the living room when we were done with the cage and had a little flying/wing flapping exercise session. she was panting so hard when we were done, she seemed to have a lot of fun. even the dogs were getting into it and being happy, playing with their own toys. my one dog has been pretty scared of ivy up till now. so the end of today was very eventful, even if it is a bit rough getting started.

i know she must be really confused and stressed. i found out from my "broker" that ivy really hadn't been introduced to toys at all (!!!!) aside from colored blocks, and she really wasn't socialized except with other hys. she is doing pretty well i would say, coming from that. and also having so much taken away from her overnight.

tomorrow is the vet visit. i am hoping it won't be too stressful of an event for ivy. and i hope the vet can ease some of my worries and give me some good advice.

more photos and video soon to come...

She'll settle in with time. I can only imagine how hard it is on all baby birds when they go to new homes. Am anxious to hear how the vet visit goes!

Id like to offer you my thoughts here. I dont have a Hy but had a similar situation with my Goffins. It turned out she had to go back on spoon fed baby food. Emily, I urge you to get some baby food into her. They can dehydrate fast. Im not trying to startle you or make you worry. Ill bet she is hungry though. She so smart, even at this young age. She's been taken from the only flock she knows and is most likely really freaked out. My Afa wouldnt eat pellets either. In a day and a half she lost A LOT of weight. They gave me bird formula and I mixed it with Gerbers baby cereal. It took me a year to get her on good food. Maybe you could get some formula and try crumbling some mac nuts really fine on top to get the calories in her. Hys can take 10 months to ween out healthy. Good luck sweetie.

Emily,

A gram scale is very important as it lets you monitor her weight every day or even several times per day. A scale is the only way you can really tell if she is eating and gaining weight. I would have some kaytee exact macaw hand feeding formula on hand. At her age you can feed out of a spoon or dixie cup should you not want to use a syringe.

I used a spoon for Afa also. Once she realized it was coming from the bowl she started going for that.

thank you so much, leigh dear. i am going to talk to the vet about this tomorrow morning. she HAS been drinking water, though, and she is pooping. still, i do agree about her being freaked out and reverting is so possible. if my vet agrees on this, i am going to call my "broker" and see what formula she was on. and i will have to do spoonfeeding from there, i suppose. i know nothing about syringe feeding.

SHe'll take from the spoon once it gets on her tongue. You just have to watch for temp. I think its 105 to 105 degress. And once she's settled and watches you and your husband eat, she will want to eat with you as flock members. Show her stuff she can share, you eat some and say, "mmmm, this is sooo good" then show her on she will tongue it. Before you know it, she will be demanding burgers!! lol
