Question Info about Macaws

I was just wondering if anyone can give me basic information about macaws. Just even if its general. The ones of most interest is the Blue Throated Macaw and the Blue and Gold Macaw. I wrote a post eariler but, I dont know if many people really wanted to give me information or what so here it goes again LoL. I really want someone to compare the Blue Throated Macaw to the Blue and Gold but, just basic information would do just fine. I can make my own comparisons later about the two if I can just get inforamtion in general.

I don't have macaw yet, Jim & Mar - majbirds8 has both. I think the BTM is a little smaller and I have heard they more friendly to more people.

Sorry it took so long to respond. We are busy preparing for our move and I haven't been on much.

We are privileged to share our lives with both species.

Maxie is a rehomed B&G.She came to us after her family lost their home in a fire and couldn't keep her in a motel. I would describe the B&G as the "clown" of the macaws. They scream for joy when they see you in the afternoon. They will also sound off their alarm when they want something. In other words, I am trying to tell you they have a tendency to be a bit noisey at times. They are very lovable and will preen you and play with you. My B&G is not a big talker. Her vocabulary is only a few words, so if you are looking for a talker they are not as good as a GreenWing. Maxie loves to "kill" her toys and will shake them and screech. They require a pretty big cage andd Maxie is very particular about her tail so she needs a big turning radius.

Oscar came to us from a breeder in Texas. He is a Blue Throat Macaw. Oscar is a cuddle bug. He has a personality of a Too in a macaw body. That being said, he is lovey but also demanding of your attention. He is not as loud volume wise as other macaws but I think his call is a bit more irritating. He will not do the Akk Akk call like the larger macaws but will let out a shriek to let you know he WANTS YOU NOW!! Oscar will willingly go to everyone but I am his favorite human. When I come home he will shriek until I physically get him out and cuddle with him. He doesn't care what is going on...he wants me now!! Get my drift? Oscar is the master mechanic. The only cage we found to hold him are the King's. He used to get out of his first cage and then go around and let everyone else out. He actually partially disassembled his first cage. Oscar does not play with tous much. He prefers to tickle me and bite my love handles. I am his play toy.

I hope this helps. We also have a severe, hahns, Hy and 2 Gws if you need information on those species. Good luck in your search and I commend you for doing your research first.

Each birds personality is different. Having different types of macaws two are b&g and one is a BTM. Each has their own individual personality.

My b&g are more active, love to play rough not only with me but with their toys as well. They also love to cuddle when they're not being nuts.

My BTM is a rescue, she's about thirty and is missing toes and half her bottom beak, plus she's a scissor beak. She plays with toys but not as rough and is more of a cuddler. She prefers to sit on me and put her beak to my face an chatter and get lots of hugs and kisses.

B&G are larger than BT but both are excellent companion birds.

Are you thinking of getting a baby or an adult?

Hey Dodgeman...sorry I can't help much with the BTM but I do have 2 B&G's. One is 9 years old and the other is just about 2. They are loud, outgoing, silly little creatures. They take up a ton of room, a ton of attention, and make a HUGE mess. They are both avid talkers. The 9 year old speaks at least 30 words clearly, and the baby isn't too far behind. They are learning from each other, and have conversations together all the time. They are a lot of work, but they are a lot of fun too. They can be cuddly and kissy, but at times they are cranky and nippy too. They have very different personalities. If you have any questions about the B&G I'd be happy to answer as best as I can...but I'm not familiar with the BTM.

That was extremly helpful Majbirds8 and Jeanne. Thank you very much. I think in a few years my husband and I will try to find a Blue Throated Macaw and if by chance we cant find one then we want a blue and gold. Or well he already wants a blue and gold lol our nieghbors blue and gold has put a spell on him something aweful. LOL she is so smart I think she has got me bird crazy too. She opens her own cage everytime she wants out lol . She is a goof ball. She is only about 2 years old or maybe alittle younger. I dont really know but, she is a sweetie. I just wanted more information on them because it seems to me that our friends dont really know everyting that maybe they might need to know because they stoped doing their Homework or research on them right after they baught them. Personally I dont think you cant research enough on your pets health and safety. I think you have to constinatly do you homework on them to make sure that you are doing the best you can. Its just like with my husband and my's two green iguanas, we have done extensive reseach on them and we are still looking for stuff about them for their safety because in this world now you really have almost to because when it comes to it, people type their opinons about things so you cant just take one opinon and not research others. You cut yourself short. Not only that but, here is an example of new updates on things, when green iguanas were first thaught of as pets, people said that they could eat dog food. Now they say that is the worst thing you can do because they have noticed in studies that fruit iguana food is best with calcium and vitiamens, along with veggies cut up. Studies change everything and you have to keep up to date on things. That is one of the main reason I am asking people with birds about them. I am also doing reserch on the net and I am sure when my husband and I get a bird we will buy some books just like we did when we got my dog and when we got our iguanas. So anyways Thank You all for your help. ~Jenna
