Considering Roy only takes a long flight about once a month, I'm pretty sure he won't be too hateful. He can still make it to his stand, just not into the kitchen.

Also I don't want to be misunderstood, NO bird is out when the kitchen is in use, and they are not allowed until things have cooled. I can just foresee him popping his head against a bottle or something, or a guest have left something out without remembering our bird rules. All it takes is one frightful mistake, makes me queasy just thinking about it!

And Leigh- that sounds scary!!!!!

Don't feel to bad sometimes safety is more important than anything. They are amazing at adapting to things. It will pass in a few days

I don't know how your house and kitchen are set up, but if you have a regular doorway instead of an open floor plan (we have an English cottage, and all the rooms are segmented), you may wish to consider something like a beaded curtain in the doorway. Most (but apparently not all) large birds won't fly through a beaded curtain.

Of course, if you have an open floor plan, that wouldn't be workable. Either way, Roy will survive, and he'll still love you :-).

How long can a beaded curtain last? My birds are not macaw but they would surely eat it.

He wouldn't fly through it, but his favorite game is peek-a-boo, and I think that curtain would make a fine hiding spot hehe!! A good idea for many bird owners though, just in case!

knowing roy and ashley in person, i can quite certainly say roy is by her side till the end. he may be grouchy for a bit, but i honestly don't think he holds a grudge or is unforgiving.

also, i am pretty sure roy has the clip that ivy did when i got her which pretty much still allows flight just not 100%. as much as i am for keeping my birds flighted, i do think it is a personal choice, as long as one has thought through their options. i learned 90% of what i know about parrots from ash, and she has always done well by her critters. roy is quite possibly one of the happiest parrots i've ever seen, and he sure knows to make his own fun!

ivy would LOVE to eat a beaded curtain. there is no stopping her lolol!

We clipped our first birds and they surely showed the same love and affection with us after a few days of calming down after their clip. With pet birds it is necessary sometimes for the safety of the birds. We now have them flighted after years of experience with macaws in our home and with safety precautions in place.

I am thinking beaded curtains might be a cheap parrot toy!

I have made some beaded curtains for my kitchen etc.
[but they were far from cheap] I made them to distract the view & also when you're in the kitchen the glass beads I put in with the wood, gleam like water droplets. The curtain was right next to Bunny's cage when she was here. On day 5 she tasted them. I'm so grateful that she was such a sweet girl. After the demo I then looped a few together to keep them just far enough away & tapped her beads & told her they were hers. She left mine alone.

When Bunny was flying she avoided the curtain entrance, so i really think Irish is on to something there.
She found the other entrance & flew right into the kitchen - landed on the table & the sink & the floor. As Bunny only flew if left alone a bit or encouraged to - I didn't worry about putting her in the cage. I did use the cage if the stove top was busy or we were too busy. She was really interested in treats coming out of the kitchen while I was cooking & she loved to sit on her cage door & watch. Her fly times were done mostly with someone at the uncurtained door - although she did push by 2x's, the stove was clear & cold.

Original post - have you ever gone without clipping for any length of time? Was your bird learning to come to you? I still think the flying part is the best for exercise & releasing tensions. I don't want to get into another clip thread debate - we all know the pros - so that's it for me.
