Default How the Hyacinth Macaw Got Its Colors

In the beginning, Hyacinth Macaw looked like many other birds, just bigger. He was all blue, so it was often difficult to see him against the sky when he rose above the forest. And his beak was straight so that he could peck at trees to eat insects - his favorite food - that lived under their bark and so that he could sip honey from flowers, like his smaller brother, Hummingbird.....

I am new to this wesite but not new to parrots. i have a African Grey that I love....12 years now since he was 4 months old. I would like to add a Macaw but not sure which one to get. They are all beautiful but....The Hyacinth is 10 times as much as a B and G but is it ten times better the pet? Also, was thinking if i get the Macaw, could I ditch the whole cage idea and go to an open indoor dragon wood type aviary and will they live ok together? Thanks for your advice...I appreciate any comments or guidence on these concerns.

loved the story.

Greys have a dust that is not good for Macaws - so living together is not a good idea - from what I've read. Having birds of different sizes together can be tricky. They have to have the proper temperament & enough space.

an aviary would be optimum for a hyacinth (or any bird for that matter!) but i wouldn't recommend housing the two different species together. on top of the dust issue that jac mentioned, there is also the size difference. dunno though, beatriz has a wonderful aviary with different species that get along together. i would just be worried!

A warm welcome, Maggie. The dust as others have cautioned is concern for health reasons of mixing a grey with a macaw. I think if you went with the aviary idea they could visit each other on occasion if they were transitioned properly into the play area and under supervision. Whether Hys are better pets than other macaws depends on the bird and it's owner. I think that any macaw that bonds with you will make a good pet.
