Smile Lorie fans, I need your help.

A rainbow lorikeet has come up for offer because its owner is moving far away and won't take it with him. It is 2-years-old and allowed to run around the house with the present owner.
I am a budgie and pigeon person, never experienced a lorikeet.
Can you folks give me some quick 'things you must know' besides the fact they eat fruit, which is what it eats now according to the owner.
Can a lorie run around the house without making a huge mess?
Are they 'one person' birds that are liable to pine away and die when their person abandons them?
I'm sure they need a bit more than just fruit...nectar..no? Got a recipe?
Anything in the 'things they don't tell you' category?
Do they tolerate handling enough to be trained to bird diaper or is 2 years old too late?
How much should a second-hand rainbow lorikeet cost?
If I would take the bird, I would want to be able to do it justice.
Thanks.

Sarah

Well, I recommend you talk to Josh (Justjoshin). He's got a lovely Rainbow Lory, and can fill you in on all the details. I'll PM him and let him know about your post.

Our Lory is a yellow scaly breasted Lorikeet named Lora.
We provide her a nectar mix, she also enjoys fresh fruits mainly applesauce.
Lory droppings are fairy messy, (runny) do to there eating habits.
For being in the soft bill family, these birds have very sharp beaks, be prepared for a bloody bite now and then.
Lora is very sweet, but she has her days and I have the scars to show for it.
(Free flight) unless this new little friend of yours is (potty trained) I can't see free flying, would be very messy.
Out of cage time yes, free flight, no.
A person can control the feeding times, this will help control the movements.

Hi,

I passed the lorikeet up because it occurred to me the owner leaving town could take the bird to the zoo, where they do know about lories. That is where the swift I babysat over a weekend went.

In the meantime, I got this baby dove to hand feed.

Thanks.
