Default Wild Bird Rehab Center

A neighbor of mine who does wildlife rehab happened to mention this place to me the other day. They are located in central Maine, and apparently are one of the largest facilities in the country dedicated strictly to Wild Bird Rehabilitation. I found their site to be pretty interesting, and thought someone else might too.

Be sure to check out the "Interesting Cases" link while you're there. It tells a bitter-sweet story of a Bald Eagle that went through a truck windshield in the town of Benedicta, Maine (only about 10 miles from where I live!). You'll undoubtedly shed a tear before you're finished. I think you'll agree with me that the folks who run Avian Haven are some pretty special people.

Thank you for that link Nate. I most certainly did shed more than a few tears for Benedicta. What a touching heartbreaking story.

The work that these Rehab Centers do is invaluable.

We have one right in my neighborhood. They have a yearly fund raising Festival. They rely entirely on private donations to support their rehabilitation, breeding and educational work. We spent the entire day there and to see their facilities, the animals and their programs was unbelieveable. They even did several releases that day.

In 1994, Hawk Creek began a barn owl breeding project and restoration program. Barn owls are the rarest raptor in Western New York, and their numbers are decreasing world wide. Unfortunately, they had become completely extinct from our region of the state.
