Default A Rescue call, Snapping Turtle

I was called to help a snapping Turtle found in the middle of Hwy 10.
I arrived to find this "at least 15 pound Turtle in the middle of the highway, He was slightly injured, and mean.
I forgot to take my camera along, this guy was a handful getting him into the back of my truck, down the road a piece I saw a lake and took the exit, I drove along looking at all the (lake front homes), I stopped at a few and rang the door bell to get permission to release the guy back into water, I finally found someone to help.
A very nice man offered to release the Turtle into the lake.
He had a small injury to his head and on the back of his shell.
I could tell he was run over by a car, I pray he will be okay.

Yea Arty! We live by a lake and my boys and I rescue turtles all the time. They seem to want to go golf across the street! ha! I have seen 1 snapper recently. He was a BIG boy that had crawled up on the bank to sun. I guess their bite must be like a parrots! ha!

I am constantly stopping on the road to assist turtles to the other side.
Everyone down here does it and no one waiting behind my car gets angry for waiting.
I think it's just part of being a Floridian.

Up here, they built a new road to help folks get home from work quicker, what they didn't realize was they built it right through the middle of the turtles nesting area.
Folks starting to complain about flat tires as thousands of turtle crossed the road to get from nest to lake....Hmmmmmm wonder why nobody complained about all those little turtles being killed by the cars?
Sooooo, instead of saying oops we error ed and tear the road out, they are trying to figure out how to get the turtles to nest elsewhere...human needs out weigh the animal needs...
Sooo many cars were swerving around this very large turtle (in need of help) but yet nobody stopped to help.
Guess thats why they called me....

I'm surprised they didn't do a study of the area before they built the road.
Down here we have all kind of laws/ordinances restricting building on land that certain wildlife inhabit.

I rescue turtles out of the middle of the road all the time. Just be careful who you give the turtles to because some people may lie so they can take it home and make stew out of it. I always do my own releasing, even though many people stop and offer.

Also, the ones with injuries I take to our local wildlife rehab as the bacteria will fester in their wounds and eventually kill them slowly. Reptiles heal much more slowly than warm-blooded critters!

Just some tips from Queen Turt Rescuer!

Here are a few of my rescues:

Oops, I didn't make it in time for this one:

Thanks for the links Missi,
I also rescue many turtles, this ones wounds were not an issue or he/she would have came home with me.
This one was in need of lake, and a lake very fast.
Sooooooo thats where he/she went...fast.
But I do appreciate your concern.
