Sunday morning I looked out my window and this is what I saw sitting on a little branch that had fallen from a tree.
He looked old enough to almost be on his own but I worried that a hawk or cat or even my doggies would get him. The parents were still hanging around and I saw them chase 2 hawks away. Even though that was encouraging I had Jim put him up in the crook of a tree on Sunday night for safe keeping. Monday morning he was still there and the mother came and fed him. He glided to the ground and just kind of hopped around the yard. Before I brought the dogs out I scooped him up and put him back on the stump for safekeeping. On Tuesday afternoon I caught him trying to fly.
Wednesday morning when I looked out, guess what I saw? His little brother or sister. So now I had 2 babies to look out for. Mom or Dad would come and feed them several times a day. Now I had to scoop 2 of them up to keep away from the dogs. All through this even though Mom & Dad were around and made noises they never swooped down or attacked me. I think they knew I just wanted to make sure they were safe.
In this last one check out the sibling flapping his wings on the ground along with the bird on the stump.
They were getting better at flying but still couldn't really get much lift. Tonight when I let the dogs out I did not see them. I hope they will be okay. When we had a heavy downpour this afternoon they were both sitting on my fence. I hope they came back into the yard and didn't go into the park. That is where the hawks have their nest.
I will update if they are still around tomorrow.
I changed my clothes and thoroughly washed my hands after scooping up those little buggers.
