I agree - probably his first winter or something.

I found the remains of the larger Red headed Woodpecker last year at my parents home - must have hit the window. We have really large evergreens around the house & some nesting sites for the smaller type with smaller bits of red on their heads - they seem more common.

Woody seems to be eating and drinking today,so I think some rest is what he needs right now.He is not at al aggressive and will let me touch him if I need to.
I could be compleatly wrong and he may not even be a woodpecker,lol.
I did check out woodpeckers for our area and from the pictures I think he is called a Hairy Woodpecker.
Here is a pic I took just now.
If anyon knows for sure what he is please let me know.

Golden-fronted woodpkr Melanerpes aurifrons
Identification Tips:

* Length: 8.5 inches
* Medium-sized woodpecker
* Pale gray head, throat, breast, and belly
* Yellow nape patch and yellow spot above bill
* Back strongly barred with black and white
* Black wings barred and spotted with white
* White bases to the primaries appear as white crescent in the hand in flight
* White rump and upper tail coverts
* Dark tail with dark central retricies

Adult male:

* Small red cap on top of head

Similar species:

Gila Woodpecker is darker brown about the head and belly, lacks the yellow nape and spot above bill, and has black and white barring on the central retricies. Red-bellied Woodpecker overlaps in range and hybrids are known so caution should be exercised when making identifications where they occur. Note the Red-bellied's red nape and barred central retricies in all plumages.

Length and wingspan from: Robbins, C.S., Bruun, B., Zim, H.S., (1966). Birds of North America. New York: Western Publishing Company, Inc.

Northern Flickers are virtually Woodpeckers apparently.

All About Birds: Northern Flicker

hope I'm not adding to the confusion - but the photo you took is kind of dark.

Definitely not a Hairy, they're all black and white, no brown. Looks like a Flicker to me as well. What part of the country are you in? If you're in the southwest, I think I recall seeing something similar to a Flicker in that area too.

It's a flicker of some sort. Most likely a Northern Flicker. Does the bird have black, round spots on his front? If so then definitely Northern.

Quick change here -
That's neat that your mom lives in Newfie, Kris. My dad was born there!
