Re: Its that Time again! We've been feeding again for about a month now. Although the weather has just been unbelievably excellent for this time of year, there has been a steady stream of visitors to the feeders. There are always Chickadees, Nuthatches (Red and White breasted), Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers, and Blue Jays, but in the last couple of weeks we've watched waves of Gold Finches, Purple Finches, Juncos, and various Sparrows come through, working their way south on migration. Soon we will see more finches arrive from even further north, and these will stay with us through the winter, as well as the Mourning Doves. When winter really hits we'll start getting Red Polls and Canadian Jays, Evening Grosbeaks and Crossbills.
I know it can be argued that these birds were around before we started feeding them, and they would probably survive without us. But it must surely make their lives easier during stressful times, whether on migration or just trying to survive through the long, cold winter months. I can't help but feel that as habitat shrinks and climate changes, they can use all the help they can get. Besides, it's wonderful to watch them come and go, and listen to their songs. I'd like to think that a full belly means there's a little more joy in those little voices. |
