Smile Guess what I babysat for the weekend.

Hi,

Friday evening I got a frantic call from my veterinarian. Some kids in my neighborhood called her and said they had a baby hawk they rescued. What to do? The vet could not come get the bird; so was calling 'chump' Sarah, asking if she would 'watch' it and feed it until she, the vet, could pick the bird up Saturday night.

'Chump' Sarah says, "OK" and thinks, "Why am I saying OK?" Later three kids show up with a ...... SWIFT! Crimoney.

Calling the vet back, I was assured I could feed the swift raw meat and the like and even catch flies for it. :-)

So, I spent my Saturday giving this little bird, which does not even have legs for walking and can't fly yet, bits of hard boiled egg and some soaked fish food which looks like bugs every two hours. Sorry, no fly catching for me.

Miraculously, the thing ate and was still OK when the vet finally turned-up - not Sat. night but 2:30 PM Sunday. She's taking it to the zoo where say says they have a flock of swifts in captivity. Good for them.

Enough for me.

Sarah

Sarah, how nice that you could lend a hand to the little one! Will they be able to release him again once he's big enough?

Hi,

The swift wasn't very big, but bigger than a canary and with these really l-o-n-g wings. It was a very beautiful sable brown color and in good feather. The vet said it was weak; and I agree it felt soft. It seemed like it hadn't eaten enough in a while before it was picked up. To me, it looked like it could fly if it had the strength.

Anyway, the vet topped it up with 'dog and cat rescue' formula when she picked it up.

The only reason I could even feed it was because it has a huge maw and, once the beak was pried carefully open, it was hard to miss getting something down its gullet. It acted hungry if not appreciative of my stuffing it.

I hope it lives.
