stinky beak?
we just adopted Cosmo into our home. He has an appt. with the vet next week but I was wondering if any of yall have noticed if eclectus have bad smelling beaks. Cosmo came from a home where he was fed a primary diet of walnuts and kettle corn, no I'm not joking, I changed him over to fresh friuts and veggies. His eyesight seems terrible and his feathers up until a recent shower were dull. His feathers are starting to glow again and his pottie has turned more normal for birds but his beak just stinks something awful. I will mention it to the vet but need some input until then.

Re: stinky beak?
If he has a bad smell like sour milk baby smell or he needs to floss his teeth he has a yeast infection in the crop. ACV can help, if the breath is too bad he may need antibiotic. Birdie breath should never ever smell bad, he should always have no smell or nice smell or whatever food he has just eaten. Once you recognize you wont forget the smell fairly distinctive.

Hi there Cosmo! Guess you are thrilled with your new home. So nice to have something other than kettle corn! ha! Do you know how old he is Ann? Nice to have ya'll here. Ruby says "step-up!".

Re: stinky beak?
Stinky beak, that's Dusty's nickname, from being covered in pumpkin and expecting a kiss on that stinky beak (dry on top of beak kiss). Sounds like it could be a crop infection, though some birds do have different and sometimes unpleasant smells that are normal. One breeder of corellas (BE2) says they smell like morning stale sleepy breath. A visit to the vet seems in order.

What new foods does he like? I'm glad to hear of his very good luck with you

Re: stinky beak?
poor Cosmo!! He's going to have a complex now!! Put three capfuls of Bragg's apple cider vinegar in a liter of water and fill his water bowl with it for a few days. That might work.

Re: stinky beak?
thank you, I have a list of things to ask the vet about next friday. Cosmo says "dirty water" "hello" "step up" and he is about 3 yrs old. I didn't have much luck with fresh foods except for sweet potato, I have started him on 2 different soak and feed mixes.

Re: stinky beak?
Poor little thing...they say you can tell what kind of life a bird has had before by what it says...one expert said they always feel reasured if the bird can say stuff like "Good boy/girl" or "Love you" or "Kiss".
