Default Overweight

I was recently in to see my hopefully future ekkie Nyla. Well, it seems that she has gained a bit of weight. So this got me thinking, how to you get a bird to loose weight?

I agree with Jim. I believe they make pellets formulated for overweight birds.

Just like people- Eat less, exersize more!

Ekkies are NOTORIOUS for overeating- Ask anyone that owns one! I swear that mine is a feathered pig, NOT a bird. She eats and eats... Of course, the upside to this is that she responds to food QUITE well for training purposes!!

My vet told us to watch the fattening foods- Nuts, etc- Even sugary fruits. More veggies, and also keep an eye on the quantity of pellets. She tends to eat EVERYTHING you put in front of her, which is a natural instinct... So, sometimes you need to cut them back a bit...

They feed her the same seed I feed my guys. She doesn't get as many fruits and veggies as she should (I'm bringing some in for her next time I go) She is pretty healthy though. She jsut went through a molt and has the best temperment. The overweight thing is the only problem. Are there any side effects to this?

from what I have read it is more detrimental for a bird to be over weight then it is for us humans. That it can cause even more problems. To the best of my knowledge Eclectus do not thrive well on mainly seed diets. The only seed Sophie gets is in the form of sprouts.

Thanks, I'll pass on the info! If I am going to purchase her, (and she's such a darling- it is so easy to spoil her, lol) I want her to be healthy. So, I'm going to the store this weekend and I'll pass it on. Thanks everyone!!!
