Default male & female eclectus in the same cage

I have an eclectus female 5 years old, I would like to buy a
male not for breeding but as a pet. I have always read and
heard that is a no no, because you could loose them both.
Is there any way to keep them from becoming mates by
having them fix, if there is such an operation?
If a breeder or anyone else got a sugestion please reply
before I make a mistake.

Thanks

Armando

Welcome to PC. I have a male who is very hormonal in a very lovable way. If I gave him a female he would take her quickly! They cannot be fixed. If you mix them and they bond, you will have eggs! And a female ekkie is not easy to deal with. I dont know that I would recommend it myself, unless I was prepared to allow wild instinct take over.

In the wild they are not "pair bond" birds. They come together to mate and that is it. The males flock, sleep and eat with males and the same for females. The females also mate with several males, insuring their survival. (Google it) With that being said, I too have thought about a friend for my Male SIE, but as much as I love the females, their colors are just really something. I would get another male myself. You could get another female, yours would have a friend, (IF THEY GOT ALONG IN THE FIRST PLACE, birds make their minds up themselves whom they will be friends with and whom they won't) and you wouldn't have to worry about breeding.

Also, if you were to put them together and they did bond, you would probably lose them to each other. It would be harder to have them as human companions.

I do agree with this. Females have many mates in the wild. But in a captive situation where the male cant fly away, she will make him work to feed her and they will bond. Being kept in the same cage is the issue.

That was not the point of what I was trying to say.

What I meant was that she could get another female, since they bond and flock in the wild, hers has a friend and she would not have the bonding, breeding issue. Not even a question about whether you could "fix" the parrots. With that question, sounds to me that she doesn't want them to breed but that they could be friends, so go for the female/female or in my case male/male
