Default Rehoming a Cockatoo

I've been asked to help rehome a Male Umbrella about 6 yrs old.Is there anything special I should be looking for and asking about a home that would be more geared towards Toos then other species? Being mostly a Macaw Mom I don't know much about Toos. Also they said this birds wings are stunted because he was kept in too small of a cage when he was young,I have never heard of this before, has anyone else?

I have never heard of that either. Maybe someone else can answer that question for you & me too.

Anyone that asks about the U2 are more than likely going to ask....(if they aren't a breeder and really want a cockatoo)

Why are they rehoming it?
Is there anything medically wrong with the U2?
They should also ask for past medical records.

You should ask....

Why do you feel you could this U2 a good home? (look out for breeders~put your ears up)
What kind of diet do you plan on feeding him?
Do you realize that they scream (natural) in the mornings & evenings?
Do they know how big of a cage he requires? (Macaw size~they LOVE to play)

I'm still thinking...I hope this helps.

Feel free to look at my adoption application on my website, and use it if needed.and I would not place a Too with anyone who never owned one, only has small bird experience has small children or lives in a apartment, and I never adopt to anyone who says I USE TO HAVE !!! unless it passed away from old age.

If the cage is to small the bird cannot exersize the muscles as well.

And this keeps their feathers from growing in correctly?

Feather issues - That is probably the poor bird's doing. It must be screaming frustrated by this point & they do tend to work on themselves when there's nothing else to do.

I have no experience with Too's - just really wanted one a while ago but gave that idea up after lots of talking to Too owners + research.

I thought I'd add my piece for things to watch out for in anyone saying they'd like the bird............

I gave up the idea of getting a Too because:
I realised they're really needy birds. Must be because of 'their' intelligence & energy levels not being met in many of our homes. I think almost all birds are quite bright intellectually - there is the odd 'dummy' I'm sure. Macaws are know to be mechanically minded. I think[?] Toos are like that as well. [I'd suggest some stimulating toys]
They live a long long time - so big birds started to be a warning they weren't for me.
Males when reaching sexual maturity can be a disaster & I'm way too inexperienced to be a good parent to a Too. That made me a bit sad but hey - we have to face these things - not make the poor thing suffer more. Having said that there are a few good people out there & a Too is their 1st bird & all is well.
Allergic problems with their dust - I am starting to notice I'm more sensitive to things. I never was before.
They would be too loud for many - & I also live in an apartment.
Make sure everyone in the home wants the bird - otherwise it can be used as a source of friction.

& maybe because everyone says they're cuddly - this opens the door to hormonal issues - inappropriate handling & long days.

Has the bird been checked for PBFD? Abnomal feather growth could be due to this virus or it could simply be from poor diet, poor care, etc. I would however get a complete vet check before bringing the bird into contact with your other birds as you don't know what issues the bird could have especially with strange feather growth. I hope all goes well

Here's another thing to keep in mind. Too dust isn't only a problem for humans. Although some folks are successful having Toos and other birds in the same household, Too dust can be a real problem for some, particularly Macaws. Its best if they have separate living quarters. It can be done, but this should be taken into consideration.
