It has been 1 week today that Mr. Tooie (not really an original name but hey I didn't name him)

Here is the update I gave to his owners yesterday.

Yes, he is doing well. He is stepping up on command (most of the time) I don't want to push him to much as he is scared of humans. I am working with him 3 times a day on
1. stepping up
2. getting use to hands
3. not being scared with new situations.

He has gotten a daily shower. I don't think he even knew what water was.

Changed his diet over to fruits and veg's. He loves carrots, corn, grapes and almonds by the dozen!

Sounds good, if he was a pet before he may have been hand fed, offering soft food on a spoon may take him back to a happy time and he will trust again.

Poor guy I hope and pray for th best for him!

I also have a Mollucan. She is 16 with no fligth feathers, butchers them to the skin. And we're working a lot with trying to get some flights in (we are succeeding so far and hasnt butchered them yet). They will no doubt have MAJOR balance issues which can result in an accidental bite for balance.

I have some innocent questions for both of you with Toos who mutilate.
Q's:
Do you take them outside?
How do they handle being outside?

I was wondering if years of being 'inside' has a tole on some types of birds.

Bless you for taking in this lost little soul! I'm glad you did indeed decide to work with him. It sounds like he truely wants to trust, but I have no doubt he will test you to your limits over and over again. I wish you all the luck and warmth in the world for helping this boy,
Stephanie

As this not my bird (yet) I am only working with him as a handler. I can't tell you to much about his past. I wish I knew more. I can account for 3 years past, in which I KNOW he didn't see the light of day. I have an outdoor aviary for my birds and any day over 50 they get to go outside and they even ask for it. If you can imagine a Scarlet Macaw saying "want to go outside" over 50 times a day - EVERY DAY! I pray for 50 degrees....

Anyways, I did get him out over the last couple of day. I was amazing watching him. I could tell from his reaction he had NO idea what "outside" was. It was very sad also. After about 10 min. he calmed down and started to enjoy it. I was just glad to get the vit. D in him....

It's so sad to see these birds in such bad condition. I'm glad that there are people like you to care for these poor souls...Have you any idea of his age? I do hope he makes a good turn around. Good luck..

No band on either leg. He was a breeder bird so I would guess at least 8. His feet are not completely white yet (they are turning white more like grey) like you see in 15 plus birds so not to sure of his age. I would guess over 8 but under 15. Without the leg band, he may be a wild caught. Not sure. Maybe some one with more aging experience than me, after all I just guessing here, can come along and tell me more. I would LOVE to know too.
