I adore cockatoos and have had wonderful success with our U2 Elvie. we adopted him as a baby at a time in our life when our children were grown and we had the time to share our life with him. We've been able to surround him with love, interaction, socializing outings, he usually plays and occupies his most of his day keeping interested in his toys. Through the years we've focused on finding out what he thrives on at different stages in his life. When we go on vacation he goes, when we go out of town he goes.

Cockatoos are not perfect for every family nor is every family perfect for toos. Most thriving toos require more communication and interaction then many other species. Ours has been a wonderful choice because we have had plenty of time to enjoy making him a happy thriving cockatoo.

It may be a good idea if the would give the too mutable visits time at your house to introduce you both before you make the plunge. I've temporarily homed a few toos over the years that came with a lot of issues due to neglect and abuse. If you are sure you can spare what ever time it may need to feel loved reassured before you take the plunge. From what I read it is in a good home where it's been loved. For that reason you may take on a whole new set of readjustment behavioral and grieving issues and yet again it may adjust quite easily. Most all toos are looking for love and someone to cuddle them Some just take a lot longer then others.

Good Luck with your decision.

I had posted to this thread a while ago. Then it disappeared, the whole thread did. Now it's back but it looks as though you may not be considering the too anymore. If you do consider taking in the too, the age may be a factor also. Sounds like it's in a great loving home now, but depending on it's age some of that could change to especially when paired up with losing it's home. Then again, it could be a smooth transition.

Karol, I was going to ask if you owned your own home and how large your property was. You do need to consider the possible effect on your neighbors because they probably won't love your bird like you do and they could cause trouble for you with the city council.

Karol, It's wonderful you've done your homework and given this issue so much consideration. We can all hope who ever adopts it will be as considerate as you.

There is a way to stop them from screaming. I have done this many times.. Some people will say its cruel. But it's not for they do not know where it is coming from..No one has said my method is crewl any ways. Other have said the same thing but, do not do it as I do..

What you do is to have a water spray of some sort..Water bottles are what I use.. With out them seeing you spray near them.. Up over the top to start.. That will stop them for a while.. It may take a few goes. If that doesn't do a thing them you hit there tail. It's really hard to explain, also you have to take in account on how they are going to.. This has worked for me many times.. I did this with Sandra also.. If you have the bird indoors you can use a fan for it.. Just have the fan alread set up.. Plugged in and you just have to pull the switch..You really do need to work out first if this sort of thing would work before hand...But most times it does...

Nat, do you think its mainly the distraction of the water or air contact that makes them stop. DO you think a quick noise would work as well? Like a clap or a whistle?

When they are screaming and I'm not on the phone, I usually try and redirect their attention. Once you've captured their attention with whatever, they'll stop screaming.
