Default Cockatoo Bites (picture)

I think it is inevidible if you share your life with birds, eventually you will get bitten. There are in my opinion several types of bites. Fear, anger, reactive, just plain pain in the butt and so forth.
Several weeks ago, I received my first face bite, and hopefully my very last.
I had to take Lover Boy to the vet for a follow up visit. I tried to put him in his crate, and he wouldn't go, so I put him back on his perch and went for the towel. He was facing away from me. As I went to drop the towel over him, he turned and faced me. Without thinking, I changed how I was moving the towel, and started dropping it down from above him as he faced me. He got scared, puffed up, screamed, and launched himself off his perch. The picture below was taken a couple of hours after the bite. He hit the floor, I said and did nothing except drop the towel over him and put him in his crate. I think that was important in as much as this was definately a fear bite, and I think had I reacted, it would have caused a problem with future interaction with him. As it is, all is well with us, as though nothing ever happened.

I call this Love Bite!

Jan, your one lucky girl that wasn't further up your face. Boy does that look painful. How is it healing?

Funny how after the fact, we realize what we had done wrong. I've done that many a times. Good call on the not reacting during a scary situation for him.

I hope you don't scar. I am afraid of those big beaks which is one reason why I am a small bird person. But those big birds are so beautiful.

my tiel seems to ge quite timid when it comes to bites ... but I have had him at my face and talking real softly to him about not biting. which I am sure you are doing yourself. I thought I was doing something but can see by your face that I will have to be more carefulllllll. I hope it clears up well for you.......
question does it matter if its a male or female. when it comes to biting...........

Jan, OUCH! That looks very painful. I hope it heals well for you. Keep an eye on it cause it looks like it's getting quite red in the surrounding area.

I'm glad there are no hard feelings about the incident. You handled it very well. I think when they react like that out of fear, they don't realize what they've done and would be totally miffed if you displayed anger or alarm toward them for what they would perceive as no reason.

Owie! Don't you just hate it when you realize something like this has happened because we made a mistake? On the other hand, it's so good to be able to identify what happened and, hopefully, avoid it in the future.

Oh My Gosh! I just noticed your signature "Home of the Gang Green" Way too funny.
I never thought about what I was doing, especially since LB (900 grams) is attached to me at the hip, and I can do just about anything with him, except overcome natural prey fears I guess.
The thing turned every beautiful color that bruises do, and I could barely touch my jaw for over a week. I have bumps under the two lower beak bites and am using Mederma in the hopes of lessing the scar.
When this first happened, my body was in so much shock from the trauma, I slept almost straight through for 3 days!

That looks painful! My only face bite (so far...) from Ollie involved my lip getting sliced open. It was about a year ago now and I still have the scar...
