Honey's big adventure On Monday when I cam home from work early intending to work at home, my son met me a the car with Honey on his shoulder. Honey took off and headed for the trees. He thought that Honey would fly to me since she is half way recall trained inside the house. The first tree she went to, we ended up scaring her. She then flew to another tree and waited. My son and I searched for about 2 hours till we found her. Calling did not help as she is extremely quiet for a sun and did not answer back.
I had Peanut with me to try find her but, my boy I am afraid was at the back of the line when brains got handed out. Eventually we found her high in a tree totally silent. Peanut refused to fly that high or maybe he could not see her.
A second attempt to catch her with the pool net only scared her into flying to a higher tree. Each time she flew we lost sight for a little while and ended up searching again.
Although she is yellow, she is still almost invisible in a tree. The third tree she chose was about 40-50 feet up. By this time we had been looking for her for about 5 hours and it was getting dark. I thought she would be sleeping in this tree as it is not climbable at all. We called and called eventually she started walking down the branches. I think the sounds of the goodnight chorus from the other birds help speed her down the tree. She finally flew to my daughter.
Honey came back very hungry and thirsty and is now sporting clipped wings. The good part of this adventure is that my son felt really bad and is now inseparable from Honey. She is so pleased to be back that is she now almost surgically attached to his shoulder. It may be that Honey has found her person. Later when her wings grow we can try recalls again, she seems to be fairly interested in the concept. She needed hand feeding after returning, maybe the world was just to scary. |
