Default Greencheek vs Nanday vs Sun

Next week, I am going to a bird fair. IF - and that's a big IF - I decide to buy a new fid, it will probably be one of the above. So if you have one, can you tell me what are the pros and cons of which conure you have? Also, how well do they get along with others? The new fid will eventually live in the communal bird room with everyone else. There is heaps of room so there won't be territorial issues and there won't be breeding issues but I want a bird who won't get aggressive with the others. The new bird would probably be 3-4 months old around if from this season's babies.

Green Cheek - small, quiet, loveable
Sun - gorgeous, loveable - high noise level
Nanday - same as sun

My vote is a GCC!!

My GCC immediately took to my caique when I brought him home, but that is no guarantee it will work as well for you.

Kathie, how do you rate their ability to get along with other birds? That is more an issue than the noise.

Nanday Nanday Nanday!! I am telling you you will never regret it! Yes Doyle is loud, but it is never constant. He has maybe 10-15 screeches in a day (which I am not going to lie- sometimes make me think me ears are going to bleed, especially when he does it on my shoulder). Mostly when he is ready to get up, when I first come home or if someone comes over and the dogs go nuts. My Doyle doesn't care for Prinny, but they can be in the same area and be just fine. Like they can both be on my shoulder at the same time and leave each other alone. They can both be at the dinner table together and leave each other alone. He is VERY affectionate and loving. He gives kisses and takes naps on his back laying on me. He would go to anyone and isn't afraid of much. Even though my other birds hate the vaccuum cleaner, he will ride on my shoulder while I vaccuum and it doesn't phase him one bit. He likes to be rubbed all over. He loves to play with toys! And almost anything is a toy to him. I also think the size of a Nanday or Sun would be better, because GCC are a bit smaller than Tiels and I would worry about him getting hurt in the bird room.

As far as agression goes Doyle really isn't showing any tendencies. He doesn't like it when Prinny tries to preen him and he lets her know, although he has never bit her! He loves to go visit Danny and try to play with him, but Danny isn't having any of it, lol. Him and Scarlett seem to like each other though and I think they may become friends.

Definitley don't count Nandays out, their noise really isn't as bad as people make it out to be.

Plus who wouldn't want to live with this cutie?

Of course my vote would be a GCC! BUT - for me it's mainly because well - I own one LOL - but also I know I can't handle the pitch of the suns and Nandays. But if the pitch of the Suns and Nandays isn't an issue for you - then I'd go with whichever one you fell head over heals for and felt a connection with. I don't know about getting along with the other fids. But my set up is different than yours. If the other birds get into Zoey's or Cosmo's area - Zoey will chase them off. But if she goes to their areas - she doesn't go out of her way to chase them off - but doesn't let them get close to her either. I think she'd do okay with Sydney - but Sydney is so layed back that I think she'd get along wiht just about anyone. Peanut's more aggressive - so Zoey isn't fond of him. Whatever you decide - I wish you luck and will be watching to see if you come home with someone new!

Unfortunately, I think that is a chemistry thing - it depends on the individual bird. I will take a poll for you at the store today. We are usually swamped on the weekends and I tend to see at least 10 Suns or Jendays (I feel they are basically the same) come through. I'll ask the owners.

I would say the main difference is the noise level. I fell in love with green cheeks because of their cuddliness and that they're quiter than the others. The only experience I have with them and other birds is a green cheek I was looking into getting scared the guy's tiels when he was out, so they couldn't be out together. I haven't brought mine home yet, so I don't know for myself.

If noise isn't an issue, then go with the one that picks you. GCC's are quieter, there's no doubt of that. As to getting along with the other birds, I think that's a crap shoot. I don't think Quito is really aggressive, but she is pushy, and very determined about it. No fear whatsoever, which could be a bad thing if any of your birds is significantly larger than a GCC.

I'd think chances of one getting along with other birds would be better for this year's baby who'd be used to being with nest mates. You know, rather than an older one who may be more used to being alone.

You being from the land of Oz and all, my personal opinion is that you need an Ekkie!

LOL, Nate! An Ekkie would be too big to live in the bird room with the others. Your little Tausi is adorable but we don't have many pois here at all and they cost a fortune!

I will defintely be looking at which bird picks me, but they need to get along with the others too.

Tiffany, I really love all the Nandays I met so far and it is very likely one will be joining us soon! Lynda's Zorro and Samm's Sammy (formerly Joanie's Sammy) both came readily to me for cuddles and were such sweethearts!

Noise doesn't worry me as long as he doesn't out screech the wild lorikeets. I do worry about GCCs because they don't seen to get along with other birds and what I am hearing about Nandays, they do. Still haven't heard much about Sunnies and other birds. I haven't had any personal interaction with a GCC or a Sunny either except for one Sunny at a dive shop in Rarotonga who was a real sweetie.
