Default Feet

Frankie has been acting like his feet are irritated the last few days...chewing on the and such. I use these Google Image Result for http://www.parrot-and-conure-world.com/images/sweet-feet-all.jpg

in his cage, along with two wooden perches and a twisty flexible rope. I know the wrong types of perches can cause feet problems in birds but I know all of them are the correct size. Should I keep my eyes open for any potential problem or is this just me loving him too much and being paranoid?

Actually, yes I have added some new ones......the ones that I posted the link to (the rough ones that are good for nail-trimming) and the flexible rope, but I did not remove any of the wooden ones that that were previously there.

I think usually when you think you notice something it ends up to be valid. Especially the feet thing out of the blue. I'd put the sandy perches only in the areas he goes in occasionally but daily ....but not in his normal favorite spots. They bothered my birds when they were on them alot. Two seperate birds in seperate cages had foot irritation from the sandy perches.

Also if they get red or worse I'd go to the vet. Red can be a sign of things like gout. But I havent heard that alot in hookbills as much as say, Canaries.

Another thing that made my birds totally itchy was some new toys. The kind from palm leaves. That they chew or whatever. They started itching immediately and I have allergies myself and when I got close I started itching myself so out they went....

Sandy perches or concrete can definitely cause irritation if used to much. I'd start with that but if it does not solve the problem please see a vet, could also be an infection or foot necrosis which can be serious. Also irritation can lead to infection that will require antibiotics. Other things would be allergies either in the air such as new cleaners, laundry detergent, hand soap, nicotine....... as well as food allergies can all cause irritation and lead to problems such as feet chewing, swelling and scabbing, itching.....dry cracked feet.... Hope it is just the new perches! Good luck.
