Default The song of a canary.... share your stories?

I just wanted to tell you guys, how pleased I am with my little brown Canary, Tweety. He sings all day, every day, seems to enjoy flying around in the "empire finch building" with his two zebra girlfriends, and eats his good food all day long with gusto.

When I come home I can hear him from outside my house, louder than the birds that are out there. He sings to me when I come down in the morning and the zebras meeeee meeeee meeee at me. I even get to listen to him over the webcam while I am at work.

I know I don't mention my little birds much, but they bring a great deal of joy to my household.... tell me about yours??

I'll have to try and get some nice pictures this weekend.

I didn't even know you had finches and a canary! I've never heard a canary sing in person but I'd love to. I think they'd be a bird that I would enjoy having some day.

I go to the bird store several times a week. They have three Canaries who sing up a storm. My Budgies sing real pretty when they aren't nattering at each other.

I had a rescued canary for a time-- Amadeaus. He was the kind that had that little top knot of feathers... you know what I mean?? I can't think of the term now. His voice was sooooooo lovely and he was actually quite tame!!!! He only lived for maybe a year with us... I think he was quite old when we got him and he'd been kept in very poor conditions for so long. He was yellow, with brown feathers sprouting in every direction off his head... he looked like a Beatle. LOL His grave is still marked under my weeping willow tree.

Sarah... I wanted a canary for a very long time before I got one this year for my birthday. I have been keeping zebras now for about 2 years.

Grandma - it has been years and years since I have had the pleasure of sharing my life with a budgie, but I do remember they sing pretty when they do sing.

Lori. Amadeaus sounds like a very neat bird. He has some sort of crest puff? Wonder what kind he was.

Wanna hear what's really funny???? Red meeps like a zebra and tries to copy the trilling of the canary! That makes them all the more enjoyable, that the big birds seem to enjoy them too. We call it the empire finch building, because of the size, and because Tiki is so fascinated with them that she does whatever she can to play tiki-zilla and climb their house to watch them. I don't allow it, but occasionally while I have dishes out of cages, and I'm replenishing food supplies, Tiki escapes to go watch them.

I used to have a yellow canary named Trill. He was very sweet and his songs were beautiful. My mom has Beau Jr. now and he just sings all day long and she is enjoying him so much. He is a Red Factor. (orange) It is making me want another.

That is so great that the big birds like to mimic the beautiful bird songs. I often play bird songs for my Budgies.

Near the end of my bird search the Budgie, the Canary & the Java Finch were on my short list. Laker won tho. We even thought of getting a Canary as a pal for Laker but thought his own kind was better overall.

My Mom had a Canary as well - but unfortunately we had a very persistent cat. It was like the cat could also fly. Until Fluffy died my Mom gave up on having any more. Her cage wasn't very big & it wasn't much of a life for it in retrospect.

I'm looking forward to your photos.

I don't have any pics on the computer of Amadeus, but here's what he looked like--

Crested Canaries

He was all yellow, but for that great crest on his head that was brown. He looked like he had a crazy haircut that hung into his eyes!

I love Canaries, Finches too! Other than a couple of wild Finch rehabs (both successful), I've never had one though. Chico, the Zon who doesn't usually like birds, had a little finch who came and went at will through the bars of his cage in his former home. He really seemed to like that little finch, or at least never bothered him. Maybe I should get him another mini-buddy?
