    Default One Baby Born!

It must have happened very early this am because, last night, when I turned off the overhead light and gave them more food and water, everything was status quo but, this morning, I saw half an eggshell in the seed dish and, when I pushed her off a bit with one finger, I saw one teeny, tiny, itsy, bittsy pink baby with one single fluffy down feather on his head which looks light so it must be yellow (he was curled up into a little ball under momma about the size of my ring finger's nail). Now we have to wait and see what happens to the other three eggs in there.

I'll ask my daughter to come over and take a couple of pictures but it won't be easy because Canela is NOT moving come hell or high water! She even pecked me this morning when I very softly and very carefully moved her aside with one single finger -LOL

5:00 pm I went in to check (third time during the day) and I saw another half an eggshell on the bottom of the cage so another baby has been born. I didn't check on him because Canela was looking at me like saying: "Don't you DARE!" I hope he's OK. He should be because when they don't make it, the mother doesn't get rid of the shell so fast. I'll check on them again a little after 7:00 pm when it's twilight and I'll let you know. I am off to get some couscous and steel cut oats to make them soft baby food. I already have some polenta ready that I made this morning and I've been putting out fresh grated hard-boiled egg and whole grain bread so there is always fresh food for them throughout the day -this is very important because if the parents believe there isn't enough food, they will reduce the babies' feedings or even stop altogether and we don't want either alternative. Today, they also got organic Gala apple, organic red Swiss Chard (the last one now that they are feeding babies) and multi grain bread with two drops of wheat germ oil. Now, in a day or two, I will add some Calciboost to their water.

Well, I was peeling potatoes for the frittata I promised my daughter for tomorrow's brunch and forgot all about the time so I got there too late and there was hardly any light left so I am not sure if there is another eggshell - but it doesn't matter, we'll find out soon enough because, if there were any more babies, they will be born tomorrow for sure and my daughter is coming in the afternoon to take a couple of pictures so you can see them. I'll ask her to take a picture of Loira's nest, too - it's a masterpiece!

This is so exciting. I love how baby birds grow so fast you can almost see it happening.

Looks like Canela is going to be an excellent momma. Congrats, Bea.

I want to see so badly!!! Don't want you to disturb her just for us though..... They have to be so tiny! What will you do with the discarded egg shells?
